Hello everybody!

My family and I are PCSing to Yokosuka in September . We have a four year old boy and we wanted him to attend the Yokosuka Co-Opt preschool. To our surprise, we found the following message on their website:

"The Yokosuka Co-Op preschool is closed as of June 25, 2010. The preschool
will not be opening for SY 2010-2011. Please contact the Yokosuka
MWR/CDC to get information on the new preschool program they will be
offering.
Thank you.
Administration Staff"

Does anybody have any idea if the "new" MWR/CDC program will be open for SY2010-2011? How is this new program different from the Sure Start program already in place? We would really appreciate any info we can get.

Thank you so much in advance!!

Hello. My daughter attended the Co Op last year. We just loved it! We registered her for this coming year, but didn't find out until the very end of this school year that they would be closing. As far as the MWR preschool goes... yes, they are opening for the 2010-11 school year. We just found out yesterday that my daughter was excepted for their 3 day program in the morning class. Unfortunately, most of us, if not all of us, parents still do not know much about the program, or the teachers yet. I know that that Co Op staff was encouraged to apply for positions at the MWR preschool, but I am not sure who will be staffing it. The Co Op had such wonderful staff and teachers. The Sure Start program is at the elementary school. However, Sure start is very hard to get in to. It has a very limited number of room for students and most of us do not qualify for it. Sure Start accepts kids based on financial and special needs basis. If I remember correctly, Sure Start only has 36 openings per year and most of us don't even qualify for applying. I wish I had more infromation for you, but like I said, we are just finding out about the MWR school and most of our questions still cannot and have not been answered about it. We get to pick up our paper work next week and there is an open house in September, but that's all I know. :0/ Maybe someone on here will have more info. There was a post a couple of days ago about off base preschools you should look in to also, if you're interested.

To mommykate:

Thank you so much for the info!!! We truly appreciate it. I wasn't aware about all the specifications of the Sure Start program! We will be arriving on September 22 from Norfolk, so it would be even harder for us to try and get him enrolled once the school year has already started. Would you mind sharing the info that you get in your next meeting with the MWR people? That would help us so much. It is so sad that the Co opt preschool is closing. Every person I had talked to that had been stationed in Yokosuka (with kids) had recommended the Co -Opt program. Thanks again for taking the time to answer my questions I love this website!

Actually isnt there a kindergarden prep for 4+? Isnt it called the DoDEA Sure Start Program. Its for childern who are born in that weird time like my son. He is mid October, so since you have to be 5 on or before Sept 1 now to go to kindergarden. They offer a kindergarden prep class. Or am I reading this wrong?

Sure Start uses family income as one of it's largest eligibility factors. It's designed to give disadvantaged kids a head start and to assist their families. http://www.dodea.edu/curriculum/eChildhood.cfm

Sure Start is a program for command sponsored dependents. It is primarily a program for qualified four year olds. (The child must turn four years old by September 1 of the current school year.) Children qualify for Sure Start based on family dynamics which may put the child "at risk":

* based on rank of sponsor (E-1-E-4 or civilian rank equivalent, first priority)
* single parent household
* parent(s) not a high school graduate
* parent a teenager when first child was born
* one or both parents speak a language other than English as their primary language;
* low birth weight;
* parent is on remote assignment (TDY) three months or more;
* four or more children close in age, living in the home;
* child has older sibling with a severe disability.

My son got into the Sure Start this year and we weren't first priority. We aren't a single parent household, both of us graduated high school, we speak English only, he didn't have a low birth weight, he doesn't have any disability, his older sister doesn't have a disability either. I think its the luck of the draw. They consider the age 19 and under as being a teenager when you had your first child. You can try and sign up for it because kids PCS all the time and you might get in. My husband is a E-6 and my son got in so you have a shot.

Actually class selection has already been made for Sure Start this year and a wait list exists. I do know that Ikego tends to have less competition for slots.

There are also some wonderful Japanese kindergartens and international schools that offer preschool programs. You can get information on these on the School Liaison Website www.cnic.navy.mil/Yokosuka/Relocati...onServices

Part Day Preschool Program will start within CYP on September 13, 2010. Parents who were enrolled in the Co-op Preschool have first priority for this year and are being contacted for registration at this time. Other interested parents can ...complete a waiting list form DD 2606 at the Main Child Development Center to be placed on the waiting list for future available spaces. This request can also be completed online at www.navy.mil through the Child Youth Programs link. Contact 243-3219 for further information.
