    Social Networking Responsibly Is Benefit

    CAMP FOSTER —

Many Marines have realized that social networking through the internet via Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and other social networking sites is now accessible on the Marine Corps Enterprise Network.

“The Marine Corps understands and embraces Internetbased capabilities,” said Maj. Gen. George J. Allen, director of Command, Control, Communications and Computers and the Chief Information Officer of the Marine Corps, in an official statement. “We can collaborate and enhance our business processes, and also provide a level of morale for our force that has never been seen before.”

After the completion of a study by Headquarters Marine Corps, it was determined that operational security and mission effectiveness would not be sacrificed by providing access to these social networking sites on the MCEN.

Marine Administrative Message 181/10 explains the importance of social networking sites in relation to the Marine Corps and advocates the use of them for recruiting and official accounts for general news and public information.

Social networking can be a morale booster for Marines, especially those overseas, said Michael Miglionico, the Information Assurance manager, Marine Corps Bases, Japan. Networking keeps the Marines, as well as the families back home, informed on how everyone is doing.

“But we have to maintain a balance between security and convenience for everyone involved,” said Miglionico. “Responsibility is key to the availability of social networking.”

According to the MarAdmin, all users of the MCEN will be able to use social networking sites such as video sharing sites and personal, Internet-based emails, as long as they are used responsibly.

“Certain information or images posted on social networking websites can be detrimental to the Marine Corps’ image,” Miglionico explained. “Users should be aware that what they post on their personal websites about the Marine Corps, or things done while on duty, can misrepresent the Marine Corps as a whole.”

Those who don’t follow the guidance of the MarAdmin and engage in inappropriate personal online activity, may be violating federal law, regulations or policies and are subject to disciplinary action under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
