My Japanese ceiling AC unit started making some noise this evening.  I grabbed a chair and noticed it quite dusty (ok, REALLY dusty) so I grabbed the vacuum.  Opened the "door" and started to clean the filters.  Was nearly done and one of the filters fell out. Oops.  I figured I may as well pull them both down and give them a good cleaning.  All was well.

Until I tried to put them back in.  I dug out out our ladder and could still barely manage to man handle them in.  I'd get one in and try to get the second in, go to close it up and one would fall- usually smacking me in the face.  Or I'd get them both in, but I could get the stupid &*#@ door shut.  Tried to fix he stupid thing for an hour and finally, they fell out as I was trying to close the door, hit me in the face, plummeted to the floor, put a HUGE dent in the hardwood and broke a corner of the plastic off.

And my housing agent is out of the country

You have a ceiling unit? Not a wall unit mounted high (near the ceiling?) Must be a very nice house... Usually there are small "L" hooks to hold the filters in place on a ceiling unit. Maybe they all got turned? Usually ceiling units the filters mount on the "cover" which should be dangling down by a series of ropes/cables. Then when finished you must reset the filter system which will engage the pulleys to get them to bring the cover (with filters) back up. A picture of the unit would help a lot though...

There doesn't seem to be any thing to hold the filters in place.  There are spots on the filters that say "Push" so I assume they're supposed to click in somewhere, but damned if I can figure it out.  There's a lip, but they don't seem to fit.  There's nothing on the cover that they could stick to either.  There is some sort of black sticky stuff, but it's not really sticky enough to hold them well.  As soon as I go to close the cover, something goes wrong and they fall down.  And they're HUGE!  They're each 24in X24in.  You need 19 arms to hold everything in place!  Something isn't fitting right because even I get the cover closed, I can't pull the tabs on the L hooks so they lock the cover.  Frustrating!!

The black gunk on the white below is sticky (a little bit) but not sure exactly how the filter is supposed to go in there.

These things are HUGE.  And you can see the broken chunk missing on the corner because it fell =(

I haven't seen one of those in years, but if I remember right...(IF I REMEMBER RIGHT being the key) I think those filters go in a little offset and then slide to a small lip lock on the edges. Again, it has been years since I saw one that old. But if they are the lip lock style that lib is a very small metal lip spaced out on the sides. Sorry...I couldn't be of more help on that one.

I just thought of a way to jerry rig them though. I have some of that really strong velcro in my office. I could give you four strips and I know that will hold them.
