    Hi all,

We have been here 3+ weeks and are just about to move off base just until we get on base housing (we are #2 on the list).  I know it won't take very long but it feels as if we are being pushed out.  The housing system is so broken, but that is a different topic!!!

Anyway, I am trying to figure out how to get internet at my off base house for just a month or two.  JCom requires a 6 month contract, and I can get it from AU but they take 2-3 weeks to get there.  I'm not sure I can wait that long!  (Well, I probably can, but my two teenage daughters might not!)  The little store that advertises for internet/TV outside Womble gate has data ports that I can have for 6000Y a month, but they are out of the until the end of the month.  Does anyone have any other ideas for me??

    Thanks, Dana

Those require a two year contract, cost $350 upfront and then about $50/month. I might just do that if I had a smart phone, but I don't.

Those wireless internet/satilite things are a total rip. Its not unlimited acess. You have some many "packets" a month. Everyone of those packets is X-amount of MB. If you go over they way over charge you. It might end up costing you thousands if you play something like world of warcraft. Thats if they dont cut you off for going over your packets. My husband almost fell for that stuff when we go here..please dont do it.Its just not worth it.

Try plala. They are a DSL provider. I'm using it in Iwakuni but I think they're nationwide. They don't have English customer service so you'll need a Japanese speaker to help (housing office rep or Japanese friend). They bill monthly to your credit card. They install quickly and internet connection is fast. I've been using Plala for a year & I'm very happy.

Um. That hasn't been my experience at all

Mine cost me zero the first time I bought it and didn't come with a contract. Softbank was running a special at the time.

I ended up losing the modem a couple of months later and paid to replace it. It cost me $200 I think. Still no contract required though.

My monthly fee is the same as for an unlimited data plan on my phone - which is essentially what it is. $50-$60/month. And I've downloaded several hundred meg files on it.

Are there any service providers who do not require a credit card for set up? We finally are in our house, and jcom will not hook up Internet without one. My husband and I really do not want a card, we've gone eight years without one (after having a Capitol one card).

    Pinkcookie -

You can email this man Jimmie Jenkins at BBapply .

He is a middle man who will help determine what is availbale in your area and assist you in getting hooked up. You send him your address and what you are looking for and he generates a report that tells you what plans you can choose from and the steps to set up. We have used him two times, once in Atsugi and here in Yokosuka and were able to find the best plan straight up! Don't rely solely on your agent, they often get a kick back from the provider they suggest, but it may not be the best for you.

BTW we ended up choosing NTT Flet's Hikari and have never used a credit card. We pay our bills either at the NEX or combini.

    Pinkcookie,

We use NTT as well and did not provide a credit care. We went to the office just outside the Womble gate right over the 7-11. They speak English so that is not a proplem. We dealt with a guy named Patrcik and so far they have been very professional and helpful. We pay our bills at the "Circle Heart Star" convenient store in Zushi. :-)
