Well, since this logo has to be approved by the likes of the Capitol, and people around here are "disturbed" by the incorporation of an article of the Phillippine flag... I'll throw in my two..

The logo did have US and Japanese flags in that defense...

The only thing that made it stand out was the great big Phillippine flag article in the background... If it did not "illuminate" as brightly, it may have been much less noticed.

Fact of the matter is, it wasn't hurting anyone. I can't see how so many people have been offended by this, since we all work to "preserve the rights of the constitution"... It is almost as if there is a group here that hates the Filipino community within this area...

Yes, they have all the jobs... yes, they got the hook up... The only reason why, is because they don't hate on their own people... and they are willing to go the extra mile for the only community that is willing to do anything on this base.

I'm not Filipino, but it does suck to read that so many people dislike their presence within the Naval community. GET OVER IT... the world isn't getting any smaller people. If you really don't hate them, or dislike their presence, or do not enjoy the fact that they are willing to work for almost nothing... don't complain about a logo.

In the three years plus that you'll spend here, you'll leave and think of Japan... not the Filipinos serving your food at the galley.

My 12 year old overheard me discussing this topic back when it happened and he innocently said "but there are a lot of Filipinos on base, why is everyone so mad?" And he was right.

They forgot to write the words "RETIREES CAN'T EAT HERE ANY MORE" somewhere on the logo. I agree that the whole Filipino thing was an overreaction. Bottom line- the place is high-vis and people running the place should realize that before they make these decisons.

I never saw this thread before the site went down. Now that it is back up I am amazed that not one of you have mentioned the irony here. What if someone's logo has a star on it? Is that automatically a part of an American flag? A blue background makes it an American flag? A red stripe or a white stripe does this make it an American flag? The point is that it was simply a sun used on a logo... That looked like the same sun used on the Philippine flag, didn't look exactly like it, but was similar enough to appear to be the same.

Do you think whoever designed the Philippine flag invented that sun design? I bet it was incorporated from somewhere else too...and with a little research (Wikipedia) their flag's sun was "borrowed" from the Katipunan flag and then personalized a little bit.

Honestly, I'm going to say I think this was all a mistake in communication. During the design process somebody probably said " This logo is lacking something, add a sun" and it was probably put in for aesthetic value and not for any relation to the PI flag. In no way do I feel that removing the logo and replacing it is an indicator of any dislike of Filipinos. I believe that the base is responding to the need to accurately portray its mission and alliances now that the mistake was pointed out. I would never have noticed on my own but agree that the situation is being rectified correctly.

Well, it was stated that they removed the original sign because the dragon was Chinese. So obviously the addition of anything but Japanese and American was not welcomed, or just not what they had in mind. So I don't think the removal of the sign with Filipino elements was hateful, just a correction.

The Commodore would like to publish this irony about the Galley logo flap that has been resurrected herein:

1) The Commodore is very disappointed that as a retiree I have to wait in line with every Tom-Dick-and Harry when they open it monthly.

2) The Commodore wants to know why didn't they include my profile in the flag since the darned place is named after me!

It's not rocket-science shipmates!

That is all ...
