I noticed that they logo has changed the other day while walking by. Someone please tell me this..Why is there not a single hint of the US in the logo and why is half of the logo the Philippine Flag? Seriously??? I can not even believe this logo was approved! I find the logo offensive since I did not join the Philippine navy to defend the Philippines I joined to fight for the US. I just really find the logo disrespectful to other races as well to America. National pride should be kept out of the work place unless it is for the US bottom line. I am German and you don't see me trying to sneak the German flag into my command's logo. Bottom line this logo needs to be changed if you don't like it you joined the wrong countries military.

If that is true it is completely wrong. The only Flag that belongs on the logo is the US flag and MAYBE the JN one since we are here but that's it!!
We are all Americans not hyphenated Americans and I agree with EL Pollo Loco, don't like it join another countries armed forces!!!

Wow and thats about all I can say....It's smart because I never would have put it together.

However devils advocate: who ever designed it could say that it's made to represent the Rising Sun Japanese Naval flag.

But I think it does bear an uncanny resemblance to the PI flag. Should be removed only two flags US and Japan!

TourerV above is the japan rising sun naval flag...that sun behind the galley logo looks nothing like it...The sun in the logo is the PI flag logo and has nothing to do with the US or our Host nation...But I agree with you remove the flag from the logo and all will be well...

Well I guess I am going to be the one to say it. Its probably becasue of all the Filipino's that have worked there over the years. First as ms's and then on to the oxymoron CS(Culinary Specialist for the uninformed). They really need to change it to just the sun.. Make it have a smily face on it or get the Raisin Bran sun . Either case the PI sun should not have anything to do with a galley in Japan.

Playing devils advocate- is that particular style of sun symbolic of something else (not Filipino)? Maybe it has some other purpose or meaning- like to say stars aren't exclusive to being symbolic of the American flag.

I find it an odd choice personally, but I'm not ready to condemn it quite yet. It looks too big and over shadows all the finer details and elements of the picture. I personally think the logo should be patriotic =)

In only 12 hours 550 views. I think you made a point with this post.

I do give the artist credit for the original design. I dont really care if its PI or PR.. It still is a decent looking logo.

    wierd.

The following is excerpted from the official USN site for the USS MUSTIN (DDG 89). What we need is a description like this for the galley crest.

    SYMBOLISM

SHIELD: Dark blue and gold are the colors traditionally used by the Navy and represent the sea and excellence. The enflamed delta symbolizes the diverse missile capabilities of the destroyer and the advent of the Tomahawk weapons system aboard surface combatants spearheaded by VADM Henry C. Mustin. The five points of flame represent the five wars where Mustin family members fought. The triple-barreled battleship gun turret highlights VADM Lloyd M. Mustin's (1911-1999) renowned gunnery expertise throughout his career; his remarkable experiences during the naval battle of Guadalcanal aboard the cruiser ATLANTA; and, after her sinking, service with the First Marine Division on Guadalcanal. The barrels of the gun turret also reflect the three generations of the Mustin Family who faced combat under fire. The red annulet denotes unity, courage and valor. The polestar honors VADM Henry C. Mustin, a decorated Vietnam veteran, who became the commander of NATO's largest fleet and Deputy Chief of Naval Operations during the 1980's. The combination of the annulet and polestar symbolizes the early gunsight developed by CAPT Henry C. Mustin (1874-1923) and the prototype lead computing antiaircraft gunsight developed by VADM Lloyd M. Mustin, a key to the United States' success in antiaircraft action in the Pacific during World War II. The four stars commemorate Bronze Stars awarded to the Mustin Family for service in Vietnam - three for VADM Henry C. Mustin, and one for LCDR Thomas M. Mustin, Officer in Charge of Patrol Boat River Section 511, Mekong Delta; combined with the polestar in a "V-shape" they symbolize the Combat "V" accompanying each of these awards.

CREST: The palm fronds represent achievement and victory in the Pacific Theater; principal service area of the Mustin Family, of USS MUSTIN (DD 413), and homeport to USS MUSTIN (DDG 89). The thirteen stars commemorate the thirteen Battle Stars on the Asiatic-Pacific Area Service Ribbon earned by USS MUSTIN (DD 413) for her contributions to major operations in the Pacific throughout World War II. The dolphins denote search and rescue, and symbolize the USS MUSTIN's valiant rescue efforts during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, where she recovered 337 survivors from USS HORNET (CV 8) as they abandoned ship. They further represent CAPT Henry C. Mustin's receipt of a Gold Lifesaving Medal in 1918, for his swimming rescue of a Sailor washed overboard during a storm off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. The Surface Warfare Officer device reflects the sea service of the Mustin Family and the Surface Warfare excellence of the two destroyers.

SUPPORTERS: The Naval Aviator "Wings of Gold" device honors Captain Henry C. Mustin, designated Naval Aviator Number Eleven, instrumental in the design of these wings. Captain Mustin was the principal architect of the catapult launch concept; made the first catapult launch of an aircraft from a ship underway; and at Veracruz in 1914, commanded the first United States military aviation unit ever to fly against hostile fire. The four crossed Naval Officer's swords symbolize the commissioned service of each of the Mustins honored in the naming and commissioning of USS MUSTIN (DDG 89).

WARNING to anyone new to this thread... If you click through from the JB home page, it takes you to Page 2 of this discussion, the top comment being from freels73 with a link to the Raisin Bran sun. Don't despair, there is a Page 1! I was all trying to figure out how you could see the raisin bran sun in the logo until I finally noticed I had missed a whole page of discussion. lol, i'm kinda slow sometimes.

here is the email i received today

    To whom it may concern,

Thank you for your comment. Your observation of the "Jewel of the East"
logo will be noted. I would like to clarify a few key points of the "new"
logo, first let me start with the history.

The reason for the change of the "old" logo.

The old logo was a Chinese dragon, the consensus of MLC and US Military that
    operate the galley was unanimous, the logo must change. With-in the galley;
multiple logos were brain stormed. Japanese MLC and US Military decided on
    the
"7 gods of fortune" and "Takara Bune" both are Japanese folklore. Why the 7
gods and Takara Bune? Well, simple really, they both had to do with JEWELS
or "Jewel of the East" which is the given nick name for CFAY Galley.

The "SUN" breaking the horizon is a representation of "land of the raising
sun" although, I see why you say it is a part of the republic of the
Philippines flag. From what I recall; that was not the intent, we just need
a "sun" with rays to complete the uniformity or aesthetics of the logo.

The Japanese/American alliance is also represented on the new logo. Both
Flags in THEIR ENTIRETY are displayed proudly in the center of the logo,
flowing on the Takara Bune mast.

You are the 1st and only person to have made such a comment and we regret
that you have been offended. Again, thank you for your comment and
    suggestion.

Hey Loco - Thanks for sharing the response. I know CWO4 Agpaoa well. He's a good man, says what he means and means what he says, so I'm sure that's the straight skinny from the guy in charge. At least we know what the background of the logo change was it reinforces the power of JapanBases.Com. Now, whether they change it based on all the griping herein is another matter. My only recommendation would have been to add something"culinary" (chopsticks, forks, spoons, chef's hat, whatever) to the logo. Maybe they should have held a logo contest and taken the heat off themselves? Just my 2 Yen here, that's all.

And one of those blowfishes. THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!

The sun does look identical to the flag somebody posted on page one. And if they wanted sun beaming out on the horizon, why would they choose part of the logo of another flag? They should use the Japanese one. Everyone recognizes that.

Then again, I got a C in art class in high school. I'm good at finger painting though.

Now if we could only fix the fact that retiree's can't eat there, then all would be well.

I walked to the galley this morning on my way to work and noticed that both of those controversial logos have been taken down. I seem to remember a regulation when I was in the Navy stating that all command logos have to be approved, or at least file, in Washington some place, maybe the Naval History Center. Somebody goofed on this one. They should realize that the galley is a HIGH PROFILE place and this retiree walks by it every day wondering if the people eating there realize they won't be able to use it the day they retire.

I doubt it most people never intend on staying. When they finally do make that decision they get so used to being able to do certain things it's almost a shock to find out our benefits that the upper COC touts all the time are being slowly erroded over time. When I finally take off my uniform for the last time, I expect to only recieve my retirement and thats it because they way things are going I may be lucky to even get that.

On my way home from work I glanced over at the galley. I noticed they were wrapping the frames with brown paper and tape, almost as if they are about to unveil something, I'm not sure. I wonder if they are dusting off the old logo? My hat goes off to Adam once again for creating a venue here for the community to affect change w/o resorting to the usual ICE Comments, Captain's Corner, and the like.
