Off base- The stores sell all sorts of Halloween goodies (on a much smaller scale)- lots of witch hats and Disney costumes. Not too many scary things compared to US, just fun witchy things. No trick or treating, maybe a couple houses have a decoration or two.

On base- Just like the US, except millions of Japanese kids come on base and it's insane. If you're handing out candy, be prepared to spend hundreds of dollars if you want candy to last more than an hour. If you're American, start early!! If you don't get in a good run before an hour passes, chances are there will be nothing left anywhere. Some houses will have lines of 40 kids at times. It's a spectacle for sure!!

I used to live on the first floor of one of the Yokosuka towers; I think it was called Sakura. Our apt was closest to the entrance. We got absolutely inundated with kids. We ran out of candy within 45 minutes and put up a sign "Do Not Disturb" which reduced the flow by maybe 75% which meant we were still constantly interrupted. Now, I truly love kids but in the future, I would find somewhere else to be on Halloween. Take the wife out to a nice, long dinner or something.

Note: Kids are smart. They figure the greatest density of candy per square meter is in the towers, so that's where they go to maximize their gain.  Also note, these were mostly Japanese kids or others living off base.

I work for a private English school. They really didn't celebrate anything until I came along.

I asked them to dress up and they came mostly as witches. Some had devil horns.

The parents were so shy and wouldn't dress up. I asked for them to at least wear Orange and my boss said that was a hard color to find.

If you go shopping out in town for halloween stuff, it's all very cutesie.

So I asked my students if they wanted to go trick or treating. So we did. We went only to their parents house, where the parents gave each child a treat. It was all very nicely packaged. HAHAHA I was like, no just throw candy in their bag!

So the following year, the parents were a little more dressed up. Some even scared the students! HAHAHA
And there was loose candy and rice cracker snacks. And they made sure each kid got the same amount. Very cute.

I'm looking forward to this year!
To enjoy Japan you gotta go out and experience it! Need a buddy, msg me!

Jlynn's experience is very much my own. For the most part, Halloween isn't celebrated widely, but it's increasing every year. It's my favorite holiday, and I always throw a party for the adults (with orange punch of the booze variety) and strictly enforce costume dress code. For the kids, I usually wear a costume to school, and have a Halloween related lesson. I work for the public school system, so I can't really hand out candy or get the students to dress up...
