The bad attitudes/hostility/me-first attitude of Americans. After being away from it for so long, it's a real shock when I return to the States.

Note to readers: I'm based in Iwakuni. I used to be based in Yokosuka. Iwakuni is a small, laid-back community. Yokosuka is about 10x larger & brings with it many of the negative cultural artifacts that you see in the US and certain other cultures, so going back to the States from Yoko may not be that big of an adjustment.

I don't mean to diss ur community; I really do like Yoko, but for long-time residents up there tell me I'm wrong! I saw it 10 years ago, and I see it still from the comments and gripes on this forum.

Oh... the size of food portions at restaurants! I lived in Thailand for 2 years, and got used to tiny Thai portions (and lost 15 lbs in the deal). A single meal at a San Diego Denny's fed my wife & me, with a box for leftovers. That lasted about 3 weeks until I started loosening my belt and chowing down that good American food and getting 12 of those 15 pounds right back. :-P

    Choices while shopping.

Well this is from England, not Japan, but I remember needing to buy baby shampoo and standing in Target for 30 minutes because I was just dumbfounded that there were 500 different bottles of baby shampoo that took up an entire aisle. just shocking!

I've gotta agree on the food portions. I went home last month and I don't think I finished a single meal out.

But I do like the drink sizes and free refills at most places in the States, lol.

And then the difference in alcohol in where it's sold and consumed. Here you can get a beer just about anywhere (like Burger King and the train station!) but in the States it's hard depending on the area.

And of course we all know the service and everything, but it's really the presentation that gets me. Out in town I can get a meal for Y1000 and on the plate it looks beautiful and the restaurant decor is great. Where in that States for $12 I probably get a burger or sandwich with fries thrown on the side. Only when you spend $$$ does it compare to some places out in town here.

I went back to the states in May so .
    1. No one is happy to help you at restruants or stores.I mean I go to mechman with a light bulb and the guy doesnt speak the same langue as me and he still helps me. Go to the states and its very much " go f^$% yourself".
2 .everything is written in english<--yeah that one suprised me too
    3. the small childern that you come across at like walmart are 10times worse than on base
4.you have more than one radio station to tune into
    5. Instead of having "american moments" while driving or getting into a car you now have "japanesse moments" -Like getting into the passanger seat and expecting the stearing wheel to be there.

    opposite point of view

    I'm big Japanese. i have 6,2 , my shoes size 13 etc
so it is very hard to find clothes and shoes here in Japan

but it was very easy to find my clothes and shoes in the U.S , that was shocking for me

The a-hole drivers in the states that cut you off or speed up so you can't pass.

Definitely the restaurant portion sizes. I can only finish about a 3rd of the meal in the states, but also am happy to take the rest to go!

Last year we went to CA and got decent service everywhere we went.(yes, even in LA) With most people bad mouthing the service in the states, yes, that was surprising.

And EVERY culture has 'negative artifacts'. Just depends on if you choose to ignore them or not.
