Is it me or is it high time for an alternative radio station? I realize alot of people might love the playlist they have in rotation. But most days I'd rather listen to the humm of the engine than to the music they play.  Not knockin anybodys choice of music, Im just saying we need an alternative.

I agree to some degree. I think Yokosuka should have their own radio station, with local events, and each base do the same. Most of the events that get offered, the special guests, featured guests, etc, are all from Yokota since its very easy to have them stop by the office.

I have heard Yokosuka employees, i.e. MWR, USO featured, but it was a call in, rather than the person live up at Yokota.

I just think in the future if each base was to have something local, it would be something more worth while to each local resident and to hear about things taking place that they may be interested at seeing or attending.

In reference to the music, I do agree there needs to be less talking, and more music. There are too many episodes with broadcasts from the states, when I would rather want to listen to music.

There are only a few Japanese radio stations that provide good music.

One benefit of Iwakuni being so remote is that we have our own AFN radio station. No other base is close enough to do it for us. I had forgotten you don't have that in Yokosuka. On the downside here, there are NO Japanese stations with western music, not even J-pop which I would enjoy. There is only like 1 AM and 1 FM Japanese station with nothing on them worth listening to unless you like Japanese crop reports.

Wait you dont have your own radio station? Dont you have something like the Wave89 "your alternitive to silence" station here in Okinawa? And yeah the motto is pretty funny. But really? no millitary disc jockeys in the mornings with all the base goings on and such. Then in the after noone and evenings we get the recored Jack FM. Dear god I hate that radio station. Its all recored and they never play any songs I have ever heard before, its pretty awful stuff.

BUt on the brighter side of things the exchange or amozon carries these things that you plug into your ciggarette lighter or cd player in your car. It has a little mount for your MP3 player. Basicly what the thingy does is brodcasts a small signal into your car from your raidio using your Ipod or mp3 player. Thus all your music you have on your player is now playing out of the sterio in your car. We bought one for my car when we started going up to the Churi Aquarium because its along drive and you loose all the radio stations when you go out far enuff into Yotomitan.

Gonna sound like a nerd here, but I like what we have. My parents live in England and while they have 200 BBC whatever radio stations to listen to, none are DoD base-wide.

Today at 4:41pm I got to hear Dave O. from Stars and Stripes talk about the upcoming sports events for our high schools and the military football league. It's a community thing. They don't have that over there.

Yeah, some of the music isn't my cup of tea, but I'm happy we have SOMETHING. And they're trying to do their best.

[anyone watch the CARRIER show? It was a 10 part thing about one of the USS aircraft carriers. The funny guy who did trash detail and was the PAO kinda guy on the carrier...he was a star of the show and he later moved to Yokota to broadcast. Is he still on over here? Anyone know?]

Yeah I didnt know anyone even bother to listen to the radio anymore....but last time I got stuck in a govt vehicle with no other options it really sucked. It isnt that the music is bad, its just trying to please everyone and by doing that pleasing no one. They finallllllly play a song that is close enough to what I like, then the next song is Miley Cyrus, then the next is some dance song, then a country song, then a rap song, then something from the 70s, then 30 mins later I might hear something else I like.

So in my own car, its metal from the MP3 player for sure and no more being the driver in a govt vehicle so that I can wear headphones on trips that someone tries to play the radio.

At least in 'kuni, they do country for an hour, pop for an hour, then hip-hop, whatever. It's on a predictable schedule so I always know when not to listen (i.e., during the morning "Boot Scootin' Round-up -- do people really talk like that??) My favorite: Way Back Wednesdays when they play oldies for oldies like me.

Inter FM (76.5MHz Yokohama / 76.1MHz Tokyo) may be able to be an alternative for foreigners.
