Let's see... McD costs like 50% more than the US. The best budget food I've found is Sukiya where you can get a beef bowl-type meal starting at 270 yen with free tea. From there, it just goes up. Japanese Italian-style pizza starts at 1500; you can get sushi-go-round for 105 per plate (fancier plates cost more), maybe 800-1000 yen to get full. If you're on a budget, a bento box (lunch box) type meal at 7-11 is pretty good for like 250-300 yen. When I'm traveling & need a breakfast this is often what I get. A good sit-down Japanese meal with several courses can start at 1600 yen and up. If you end up at a businessman's restaurant or want to eat western style (big cut of beef or something) expect to pay upwards of $30. Living & eating like a Japanese is always much cheaper.

Among my favorite places to eat is when I'm on the toll road (usually with a rental car from the base, with free toll tickets), they have roadside pull-offs for gas and food. There's always a cafeteria-type restaurant where you buy a ticket for your meal from a machine. You can get udon (noodle soup) or katsu-don (breaded pork cutlet over rice) or Japanese curry for like 300-400 yen. Not high-quality food, but tasty & fun. I'll eat here before arriving at a tourist destination where prices are always higher. Make sure you watch the other diners to see how to bus your dishes when you're done! Each place is different, you have one place to throw your chopsticks, another place to scrape the food, a different place to put silverware, glasses and plates.

It depends on if you're eating out... or going the grocery route?

I spend about $120 a week on groceries here (out in town) for a family of 4. That's probably 20% more than I spent in the states but the food is better quality IMHO. It just depends on what kind of food you're after, I guess .

Good point, Val. I took this as a tourist question, but perhaps not...
