There are Japanese chickens in Iwakuni Japan. What exactly are you searching for? BTW, one of the most unique local restaurants is a place irreverently nicknamed "Chicken Shack." It has great bbq chicken and many other unique dishes. Their website (Japanese) is www.irori-sanzoku.co.jp.  A review in English is here: www.japaninyourpalm.com/Restaurants/sanzoku.htm#about

California Chicken was a little mom n pop shop. Not one of the "Chicken Shacks"

I remember the California Chicken place. iirc it was run by an expat and his wife. Go out the main gate, cross the street and turn left. Take a right down the next street (stay on the right sidewalk as it'll be there)

I can't tell you how far it was, I remember (i think) a roll up gate that you pass if it was closed and you weren't paying attention. I do remember it wasn't that far of a walk, maybe 10-15mins round trip from the gate. I never drove there as I only had an on base license.

It was open only during the evenings, 1700-2300 or so.
The fried chicken was awesome, as well as all of the sandwich options.

Last I was there was in 96 so I don't know if it is still open.

will check on this with a friend thats still in the area.

I hear about this place from time to time, only chicken sandwiches, not fried chicken. I keep meaning to check it out; I think I know where it is but it's always closed when I go by. There's also a BLT joint right out the gate I wanna try; people swear by it, but I've never seen it open.

The California Chicken I know from 97 to 01 was passing 4 corners straight for less than half of block on the right. It was open all night...The best chicken around the area!!!

Just got in touch with friends from the area. California Chicken is going on strong.

ThaiGuy, What I remember was they did chicken pieces (not like southern style fried chicken) a chicken sandwich, BLT, and an Egg and Ham sandwich.

Cool, i'm totally gonna check 'em out. So the BLT & chicken are both in the same place? I keep hearing rumors of these & people swear by them; I'm gonna try 'em both soon.

Loved California chicken. Their hot/spicy sauce was the best. I was stationed at MCAS Iwakuni, Fall '91 (for a month) and returned in '92 (for 6). Bring a pack or 2 of chicken bites back to the bks. That and a cold brew or two was the perfect night time snack.

The BLT place is different ThaiGuy, if you go out the main gate it is on the corner of 4-corners (a couple doors toward the intersection past Galaxy Club). It is VERY small and easily missed, the entrance is sandwiched between to bigger buildings but I believe its the second to last door before the intersection (on the left sidewalk). Once you find it, you will know its the right place, very small inside and its run by an elderly couple. Hope this helps.

Saw it last night! Thanks, MM2... you are the first to actually say the name of the place. It's gotta be the only 3-foot-wide restaurant in the world; it is TINY!!

The BLT is BACK!  Sako's  had been closed recently due to retirement of the owners (in their 80s). It got sold & remodeled & now back in business with the same ol' menu. It's said to be open M, W, Th, Fr and Sat -- 1030 till ? Sign in English is now on door.

I STILL haven't gotten my BLT or my California Chicken after 2 years here, but someday I will prevail.

Wow, my wife and I stopped at California Chicken on Sunday night on our walk from Kintai Bridge back to base. We met the owner who was a pretty decent guy, then I ran into him on base twice yesterday. We thought the cajun chicken was pretty good. It was one of the first places I noticed out in town. It's on the same street as Sako's, only a little further towards 4 corners.
