Just like any home in a sub-tropical zone, there are going to be bugs (ants, cockroaches, millipedes, spiders, and other creepy-crawlies and flying things) Not really a health concern. The snakes can be deadly but unless you're venturing off in the jungle to find them, they won't be a problem. The larges health concern I've heard people most talk about is mildew or mold growth in the home. Mildew comes from moisture and there is lots of moisture in Okinawa's humid climate. The key to keeping mildew out of the home is simple...keep the moisture in the air from forming condensation onto your walls or other areas. A common mistake is turning the air conditioner down too low or making it really cold in the home. This actually can make your home more susceptible to mildew because creating a large thermal difference makes the warm, humid air outside want to find ways to get into your home. Hot air can hold more moisture than cold air so when the warm air gets inside the cool home, the moisture comes out....accumulating on walls, crevices, wherever its cool. Keep your thermostat set around between 24-26 degrees Celsius (74-78 degrees Fahrenheit), just enough to keep you comfortable. And also remember, when the temperature gets cooler, turn the a/c off and open the windows, utilize fans to circulate the air through the home.

There is a japanesse mold spray you can buy out in town to help keep down on the mold. MMM Im going to have to find a pic of it my keybord doesnt do Kanji. There is also this sandis graval looking stuff that smells pretty the commisarry sells. When they have it in stock buy it in bulk. But this stuff absorbs mositer. So I put it in a cup or a bowl in my closet and let it be to help keep the mold off the clothing. I also put it in dixi cups and place it on top of my japanesse air conditioner/heart. Right where that vet is on top is. It helps alitte to keep it from getting moldy inside. And no matter how I use my units like someone told me one day on one day off and let them dry the mold still comes. All you can do is clean it out (wearing a maske goggles and gloves) and slow it down.

Other than that safter or health concerns I have.......well I had a friend that had a dog on base. She never cleaned the yard it was gross it smelled to high heaven. I think the Housing Office was really lax on her. I know her neighbors smelled it and they all moved too. It got really bad when it got really hot and what ever it was it did to the ground is just vomit inducing. Now that you arnt allowed to move off base I worry about the people who have to live next to her. That can't be sanitary. And Im not sure if they can just move away now. I havent been over there since it got really bad I refuse too, I just hope it has gotten better or the housing office has gotten on her. But people who dont clean up after thier pets! Because everyone here seems to have a dog.
