Ok, I probably know all the NEGATIVE things already, but we recieved an offer in Ikego today while we were at AOB.  I REALLY wanted to be on the main base, but the APRIL wait time (hasn't been updated online yet. We went into housing today and looked in their housing info book) for a 4bdrm is now 3 months, which means we run into TLA issues if we decide to wait out for a house, but then again, we are #2 on the list.

So what I need is for you guys to attempt to CONVINCE ME that if I take the offer I'll be making a good choice...but I must warn you, it won't be easy..

Also if you have nothing postive to say, would love to hear you oppinions on how I could find a way to stick it out until we can get a house on Yokosuka!

Its never crowded. forces you to get out and drive while in japan. Nice pool area. Zushi is a beautiful city to get out and walk around in. Kamakura is only 6km away it is a beautiful tourist town.... there is a lot more but it's hard to think of everything at the moment.

What negative things? The drive? It's not bad. how far did you have to drive to work and to shop in the states? Once you learn the routes and get comfortable, it's fine. That's really the only negative thing I can think of. We have the closest access to a train station of any housing area. It's spacious and quiet here. The housing people are WONDERFUL. It's quiet. Your post office box is close by. The mini mart isn't a commissary but it does in a pinch most of the time. There are several Japanese grocery stores and produce markets nearby. It's quiet. The gas station is very convenient. You pay at the pump and don't have to go inside to pay. Parking is good. If your child is in the 3rd grade or below, the school is right here and if they are older, the bus takes them and brings them home. Did I mention, it's quiet? No single sailors. Don't let the drive scare you. I was scared at first and didn't want to move here but I'm glad we did.

So Polly, would you say Ikego is quiet? =) That's definatly a + in the for Ikego column!

Actually the drive is the one of the BIGGEST issues for me...I was hoping to just get a bike and ride/walk not only to save the money, but because it kinda forces me to get some much needed excercise. In Ikego, I'll be forced to drive, and it makes me really nervous... I'm scared I'll forget to drive on the wrong side! If I could walk/bike from Ikego to Yokosuka I'd be jumping all over it! For that matter, if there was a NEX, Commisary, and that kinda stuff on Ikego and I didn't have to go to Yokosuka at all that would be even better!

I'm not scared to be off base so that's not the issue, and if it weren't for my dog still having quarintine for a few more months (ends June 21), I'd probably be pushing to live off base instead of Ikego, but close enough to walk/bike with the kids to shop and go to school.

Can you tell I'm really not to big on driving here?

The school thing is a whole other issue for me...my daughter is in Kindergarden and she's very smart. I want her to have all the opportunities avalible to her and I don't want her to get short changed!

But that's a little bit of insight as to why I'm not so excited about it...Ok so pour on the Positives!

I love being in Ikego. The housing units are newer than Yoko. I wanted a townhouse and I held out until one in Ikego came open. We have a playground right in our backyard so it is wonderful being able to let your kids basically go out in the backyard and play. We have a mini mart, gas station, and The train station is much closer than the one in Yoko. And there is a lot to see and experience in Zush Cityi. It gives me a sense of getting away from work and seeing everybody that you work with everyday. Its quiet. It forces you to get out and see Japan not just the navy base. I only wish we had a better gym out here. But i can live with that. One of the main reasons I came to Japan was to experience it not just stay on base. Ikego allows you the opportunity to do all of that with some comforts of the U.S.

If you take the train, then there is the walk from Shiori or Chuo that will give you some exercise. I know people who ride their bikes or run/walk to main base but that is scarier than driving to me! You do need a car to bring home groceries. Though, I do know a couple here at Ikego who have "gone green" and her husband has an insulated backpack in which to bring home groceries. Another friend would take the home-to-work bus in the afternoon, get groceries, then take the later h to w bus back. You can usually find a friend who will give you a ride, too. If you have children, though, a car is good in case you have to go to the ER or to DR appointments, etc...

Not to mention that living on Yoko would represent everything I was trying to get away from by leaving the US. Don't be scared to drive here. The drivers are more courteous here than in the states. Living away from Yoko means that you get to enjoy Japan for what it is, not enjoy the base because it's just like the states. Just my .02

I think everyone who lives out here shared your same fears at first. I will guarantee you though after making the drive a few times you will have so much confidence, it will be but a mere after thought. After a while we started to explore all the different neighborhoods right outside the gate that was really cool. Zushi Beach is very nice in the Summer. Just like the rest of Japan traffic can be irritating but there are a few short cuts that you will learn to cut off a lot of that. Hey just do it what do you have to lose? Your only here in japan a short time make the most of it. Please dont be one of those people that stayed on base your entire tour! And tranfer with your fondest memory of Japan being 1st in line at the commissary for the xmas sale lol!!

In relation to Yokosuka it is closer than Negishi. It offers a beautifully remodeled camping area in west valley. Public transportation line is right outside the main gate entrance. Plus it is rich in history, oh and it is listed as one of the most haunted places on earth.

I love living in Ikego. We had the option to get into a tower here or on the main base in Yokosuka and we absolutely did not want to live on the main base. If you are looking into schools for kindergarten, there are schools that are located in the area that are Japanese schools with American students (which will get your child involved in the culture, too). I know that one of the schools (Hayama) actually picks the little kids up right in Ikego and drops them off after school. Big Brad is right- there are a LOT of people who get into a comfort zone in Yokosuka and they don't see anything outside of the gate. There are so many things to see here, even just around the Ikego area, that it may be worth the driving Plus, keep in mind that if you are coming with a pet, you cannot take it on the train or the Home to Work bus, so you may want to think about getting one so that you can go to the vet clinic. The driving IS scary at first, but once you realize that you literally only have to make one right turn onto another road and then you drive straight to the base, it's not so bad. Hope this helps!

I"ve lived in Ikego for 3 years without a car and if you don't want to drive you don't HAVE too! The train is so close and the shuttle busses on base are easy to use. The walk from Shiori to base is not bad and makes you walk through town. I've been here 3 years and still see new things everyday! Ikego also has a nice small and quiet gym, and camp grounds for nice walks, and a new dog park!

I know you wanted positives, but to be quite honest... the one thing that I think you should definitely consider is the school issue. I didn't like that it only went to 3rd grade. My son would have had to bus to Sullivans starting in 4th, long time away for you, I know, but I hear that Ikego doesn't have a lot of what Sullivans offers. The kids here have a "specials" class everyday, Spanish, Art, Music, PE or Host Nation, one of those five. The school here also offers plenty of support help should a child need it, Read 180, extra math support, etc. My son (he's in 4th) also has a GE (gifted teacher) that comes into his class once or twice a week and works with the kids that need more of a challenge, say there are a few kids that are excelling in math, they will work with those kids on "extra" stuff. The school has a huge library and gets hot lunches. Now I know that you could always go to the community center for extra activities, but you'd still have to come to the main base. For ex: pottery classes, dance, karate, etc. I don't mean to be negative and I think if I wasn't dealing with a school issue, we would have definitely considered Ikego. It is very quiet, not that typical "base" feeling and most everyone I know that lives there loves it!!

Quiet, close to the beach/Kamakura/Hayama, no drunken squids rambling thru the housing area, etc...

And some people DO take their bike to work. Shouldn't take more than 30 minutes.

I think we will most likely take Ikego, unless there is a Townhouse here avalible sooner, but chances of that are slim. Our housing counslor called in sick today, so we were unable to make an appointment. Thank you all for replying! I do feel more comfortable with Ikego now.

I definalty was not wanting Yokosuka because it ment I woudn't have to leave base. It was more that if we needed something, for example if we ran out of grits or something (from the south =) ) I could run to the commisary and get it as opposed to driving for 20 minutes to get it...not including packing the kids into and out of the car that alone can take 20 minutes depending on their particular moods... Or that I could order any number of foods to be delivered to the house if I chose not to run to the store...

Does Ikego have any places that will deliver?

I live in an Ikego town house. Don't let the drive scare you. I don't really like driving and was really nervous the first few times I made the drive, but it really is not bad. Aside from Anthony's Pizza, I don't know of any other places that deliver food. I have kids at YMS and KHS. The bus ride isn't bad. I don't have any experience/info about the elementary schools. Hope you find a place to call home soon.

Ikego has the closest train station. It's only a 30 second dash from the mini-mart parking lot.

There are trails right there on base and some really amazing ones right off base!

The Zushi American Society hosts wonderful cultural exchanges for base residents including cooking classes at the center right outside the gate, playgroups, and a Samurai parade where they will actually dress you up in the full gear and you can march in their parade. They also have shopping trips from time to time and volunteer tour guides. I learned more about Kamakura than I thought one person could know taking those tours.

Ikego is a nice community. Like everyone mention, it's closer to train station, mini mart, mini gas station, school, gym, swimming pool, hair stylist, child care, post office, fleet family service, club t and anthony pizza.. MWR sponsors movie nite free of charge. We have open base with lots of activities. Zushi is nice city, as well as Kamakura. Yokohoma is not far. Costco is close by as well as Daiei mall. You and your family will just have to venture out and find your favorite places to go. I love it here in Ikego. I only come to Yokosuka when i need to buy grocieries or just get a way for a minute....

I am a teacher at Ikego and we have everything that Sullivan's has except the 1000+ students.  I teach Kindergarten and my students get Spanish, Art, Music, PE and Host Nation.  Art is just once a month, Host Nation is twice a week, and Music and PE are once a week.  We also have 2 Literacy Support Specialists for reading and Read 180.  Our specialists also offer Math support to those kiddos who need it.  We also have a GE teacher that services the GE students.  The only thing we don't have are "hot lunches."  Our lunches are trucked over from the middle school and kept in insulated containers, but sometimes "hot" is just "barely warm."  Your student can always bring a lunch from home.   We have a great library and we use the MWR gym for large assemblies.   Ask any student, Ikego Elementary is great!

Awesome! Thanks for clearing up the school issue! Is there any plan to have ART on a more regular basis? My little girl loves art...do you do art-project things with them in class? At her last school we (I vollentered to assist) did T-shirts for holliday times, made q-tip snowflakes, painted, and lots of other fun artsy type things durring class time. If this were an option, I think she would be less disapointed with the once a month art class.

Also, could you tell me about the gifted program, and what is involved in having a child enrolled. At her previous school, they didn't test for the gifted program until 1st grade, but obviously she won't be there for 1st grade. They told me to make sure I get her tested, so that she doesn't get bored.

Chancie, about the gifted program. I've been through the process and there is no 'formal' testing. You have to fill out request forms and wait quite a while to see if your child qualifies. During the waiting time, evidence of giftedness will be gathered and looked at closely. Then the gifted teacher and other board members will have a meeting which is when they decide if your child qualifies. Keep in mind this process will take at least a few months if not more. It's difficult, but you have to be patient. But once your child is in, she is automatically accepted into other DODDS gifted programs. (other schools) Here is the link about the DODDS gifted program:

Being a K - 3 school, we do lots are "artsy" things in the classroom.  As for the GE program, our GE teacher is able to provide enrichment to all 1st graders and then to the identified 2nd and 3rd graders because we only have about 250 students.  We (the classroom teachers) also differentiate instruction to provide our higher students with  lessons and activities on their level.  I know my opinion is biased, but our school is as good or better than any other DoDDS school around.  Just to clarify the art situation, our school is staffed with .5 art teacher and .5 PE teacher.  We were fortunate to find Mr. Larry Taylor who was certified to teach both art and PE.  Unfortunately, Mr. Taylor passed away and of the thousands of applicants to fill his position, not one was certified to teach both subjects.  We have a wonderful PE teacher who teaches PE full-time and then 2 wonderful volunteers who teach our Art program..

Thanks for all the responses! We signed the papers to move into a Town House on Ikego and we move in Wednesday! I'm very happy to be getting out of this Lodge! 3 kids in 1 room = non stop migrane! And I'm glad that my doggie will finally get her get-out-of-jail pass! I wasn't able to get into see the unit, because hubby has ship indoc and we still have no car. I know we could take the train, but again 3 small kids and it's raining...not worth the hastle! So if anyone could tell me a few things about the units and surrounding area, I'd be greatful!

    Carpet?
    Resturants near the base?
Where do I go to enroll my kids in sports/music stuff?
Fun things to do with or with out small children on and off base?
Any cool things you've found that you've found and wish you've known about sooner?
Or for that matter just ANYTHING you want to tell me!

Thanks again for all the responses!

We're still trying to figure out a ride, told hubby he needs to make his sponsor take us and do something that is actually USEFULL since he's done nothing except get our luggage from the lobby of the lodge to our room....

We went to kamakura with the AOB class, very pretty...

Our stuff doesn't arrive til may 13, or that's when it's scheduled...

Bummer about the carpet...was hoping I wouldn't have to buy rugs for upstairs!

    Chancie,

If you need help getting to Ikego or if you need a ride to pick up groceries or anything please let me know. We live in Ikego. I'm always driving to Yokosuka for something. I remember when we moved to Ikego our sponsor wasn't available so we had to pay for cabs to get out here. It's an expensive cab ride, for sure.

We had the same problem with a sponsor~Did get us to the commissary and back to the BOQ...hubby had to rent a car from there to get our stuff to the new home here in Ikego...we shipped our car from sasebo but it hadn't arrived when we got offered housing...to make matters worse, we went to the states and returned via the train....took a cab from zushi station and then had to walk from front gate to our house....a good mile with 3 kids and 6 pieces of luggage...we were tired, hungry and freezing....As Jenna said, if you need a ride to Ikego please let us know....also I think there's a family member assistance team that offers those services....If someone knows, please jump in and let chancie know....
would like to get up with you chancie when you get settled in as we are new here as well and I know only one other person....

I live in a TH in Ikego and it's great! No carpet, but the floors are clean and theres a ton of storage in the units. Not sure how old your kids are, but theres a playgroup that meets in Nikko Tower every week and Im told it's a nice way to meet people/have your kids play. The CDC is nice too, the people are wonderful and they offer hourly care if you ever want to run out in town minus your children. Zushi is just one stop down, and theres LOTS of nice things to see! I shop for groceries out in town and the markets are awesome - the fruit is fresh and cheaper than at the Commissary. The beach is also a short walk from the train station in Zushi. I do not drive at all (tho we do have a car) and only walk or ride the trains - theyre pretty easy to learn. The mini mart here in Ikego - in my opinion - can be a god send! They have a lot of the necessity items and its great for the days you cant make it to town or the commissary. There is also a shopping mall a short train ride from Ikego (just 2 stops up) and theres a grocery store/drug store in the basement that offers a ton of stuff, and they also have a dollar store on the 3rd floor. I could go on and on....if you have questions or need help getting around please email me, Im happy to help! I was super nervous living here and deciding not to drive (I have 2 kids) but now love it and wouldnt change a thing Best of luck!

Thanks everyone! I got my house on Ikego today and so far I'm really happy with it! The walk to the mini nex kinda sucks sine we have slot of stuff we need to get, but we should be pretty much set for the next few days or so! I can already tell how much more quiet this base is opposed to main base!

Chancie, I am so happy for you....It is much quieter over here than main base..I think you live across the street from me...I saw a moving van today....did you get your HHG already?
Please feel free to email if you need anything...I am going to base tomorrow if you need something from the commissary.

Welcome to IKEGO!!! I hope the you and your family enjoy living here. Its not so bad.. Marutsu and Coop is a grocery store near by. Also the 7/11. Most people walk to these stores, but I prefer to drive. Zushi is just a train away. There are a lot of restaurants and stores. Mcdonalds is also in Zushi.... U just have to find what works for you. The beach is just a walk from Zushi.

Jenn if you love taking pictures, please post to the sightseeing albums in the pics section. I am still trying to find people interested in sharing their pictures and the locations others visit. If there is no album for the place you visit per prefecture, you just have to ask, and I will create it asap. Thanks.

Chancie, have you moved into your place in Ikego? What do you think about it now that you have? How often do you have to come back to main base, and do you have a car? Sorry for the questions but we have to pick soon and I'm just wondering from another mom's point of view!

It's QUIET.  The train station is close to base.

THERE IS NO TAXI SERVICE, but they serve alcohol at the club.
THERE ARE LESS ACTIVITIES ON IKEGO THAN YOKOSUKA
THERE IS LESS TO DO OFFBASE IN WALKING DISATANCE
IKEGO RESIDENTS DO NOT CONTROL THEIR AIR AND HEAT LIKE YOKOSUKA
    THERE IS NO LIBRARY

Did I forget to mention.  Yokosuka has hard wood flooring.  So if you are a homeowner and yu are used to hard wood floors, you will not get them at Ikego.

    The townhouses are TRES SMALL.
