I received this question via email.  I am posting it to get a few additional answers for the girl.  Please help me out on this one.  Thanks!
    ---------------------------------------------
My boyfriend is stationed at Camp Kinser, and I'm planning a trip to meet him this summer in Tokyo. However, he lost his passport while he was in the US, and doesn't know where to get a new one. And we need it within the next few months for him to be able to meet me. Any idea who he should ask?

I am not sure about Camp Kinser since your boyfriend is currently stationed there.

I know the embassy has directions to follow and making appointments here: Tokyo Embassy Information

I would ask your boyfriend to check in with his bases LEGAL department. They should be able to direct him for re-issuing a new passport, and it should be ready before the summer time. They usually take anywhere between 4-8 weeks.

    That's an easy one...

First, have him read this (http://tokyo.usembassy.gov/e/acs/ta...130e.html)

Second, he will need to take all the required documents to the Consular's Office in Naha City (Okinawa) at the below address:

    U.S. Consulate General Naha
    2-1-1 Toyama, Urasoe City, Okinawa

The whole ordeal as long as he follows the directions at the above website to the letter will take approximately 6 weeks. Mine only took 3, but I was told that was luck.

Does he really need a passport to get from Oki to Tokyo? I mean, it's all domestic travel and he got to Oki without a one. Anyway regardless, he needs to replace it soonest. It's dicey and inconvenient being here without a passport.

He should be able to travel with just his leave chit or orders and ID card. My husband just got a new passport because he lost his (plus it was expired) we traveled here with his orders so that wasn't a big deal but since we are going on vacation he got a travel passport. But anyway we made our appt. online, we went on a Thursday and he got it back the following Thursday in the mail it was $100 plus 1,000 yen for the passport photo which is located at a kiosk inside embassy it took about 1hr.

To travel inside of Japan he wouldn't need a passport or a leave chit...of course the military requires him to have a leave chit, but the airlines could really care less. His CAC would suffice as identification if the airport was doing 100% ID checks. He still needs to replace his passport (not because he absolutely has to have one, but it is always best to have one)...

Thanks so much. Just one more question:

Will his military ID suffice for checking into a hotel? I know I have to give them mine upon check-in. Just wondering if they'll be picky about the passport.
