I'm glad to see the bus schedule; and I have a few questions. I retired from the Navy a bunch of years ago, and in a few months I'll be returning to Japan on a nostalgic trip with my wife. I'll want to visit Negishi Heights where I lived and, of course, the Base. Is the Yokosuka Bus to Negishi a best way to do this? If not, what are the best alternatives? With a Retiree Military ID, will there be access problems? And finally, does the military bus from Narita present a viable opportunity to get to Yokosuka, or would it be best to just try commercial transportation?

    Thanks,
    Jack Thomas

Yes you shouldnt have any problems using the bus, or getting onbase with the ID card, but something you must realize, the bus is used for transporation for official means. Its supposed to be used for HOME TO WORK, not just tourists, although there shouldnt be a problem.

This post should help you understand what I mean:

Something to keep in mind...the buses are very crowded and there are times when there are not enough seats for people going to/from work.

You've probably made the trip by now and figured this out, but the bus goes from Negishi to Yokosuka in the mornings and from Yokosuka to Negishi in the evenings, so unless you're spending the night in Negishi, I don't think this will work.  I don't think you can ride to Negishi in the am or to Yokosuka in the pm, so the train and bus combo is going to be the way to go if you're not driving.

Still trying to plan this thing out.  Say I want to visit Negishi Heights some morning from my hotel in Yokosuka with my wife.  I just want to scout the place out and see if I can find the base-housing we lived in back in the 60's.  What's a best scenario to follow?  Train or bus to somewhere in Yokohama?  Can a taxi drive us on base, or should we just plan to be dropped off at the gate and hike it?

    Some recommendations?

It's best to take the train, because the HTW bus only goes from Negishi TO Yoko in the morning, and a taxi would cost too much.(over 100) First the train, then the bus, then walk.

    Here are the instructions:
    http://gw.ffc.navy.mil/JapanInfo/Tr..._Train.pdf

Can I ask why you want to check it out? All it is is a housing area with a small community center.

Is the availability of space on the HTW Negishi Bus a continuous problem? This is going to be a deciding factor I think for us. We were thinking at the beginning to have my husband use the Negishi HTW bus until we got settled, got a car and/or got comfortable with the public transportation system. And the reason we're leaning more towards getting housing in Negishi is for the backyard space (we have two kids that would LOVE it) and because my son will be starting pre-K so the elementary school is right there.

I'm on the bus going home right now and it's "crowded" today . . . Meaning there's at least one person in every seat (2 person seats) and a couple seats have two people. I've never seen it full, especially the 0530 morning bus. If it ever was full, military members have priority for seats. My husband and I both work and both take the bus and we've been fine without a car. The only down side is if you have to be on base before 0630 and don't have the option of driving in.

Also, I haven't been on the bus when the carrier is home and during the school year, so things might be different then.
