This one hasn't been touched on much... anyone got any good info to share about classes, styles, both on base and off base?
Warning: Eventually, I WILL say something that offends you. This is perfectly normal. My recommendation: get over it.

My son takes karate at the community center. He's got an awesome instructor who's really challenging. We might be leaving in 1 1/2 yrs. I tried to find Fushin Ryu dojo(what he's taking now) in the states and only came up with Florida. Unfortunately, it's religion based. I don't understand why, and frankly it's really frustrating! So we are trying to stay here as long as possible, so he doesn't have to start over.

I recommend sensei Kato at the Negishi MWR. He's really strict, but fair. He also offers adult classes.

Tammy, one of my 4 year olds was taking Fushin Ryu karate on Yokosuka base until recently. I've seen kids come in from other dojos in the States with letters from their senseis telling what level they were. Sugihara Sensei has let them come into the class at the level where they belong. I'm guessing it would be the same way at a dojo for another style in the States, so your son probably wouldn't have to start over.

I'm also very impressed with Fushin Ryu and Sugihara Sensei. He's also strict, but very fair and kind.

Adina-thanks for the info. I didn't know you could do that. That puts my mind at ease!

I suppose the thing is relearning all the kata. Supposedly different dojos have different kata. But if he could keep his rank while learning all the new kata, that would be great.

How far are you willing to travel?

I know several pro-fighters here with their own gyms around tokyo and saitama.
Also you can check out Budokan in Kudans**ta, Tokyo they teach all different forms there..

"The Nippon Budokan , located inside Kitanomaru Park, is the venue for big musical events and Japanese martial arts. This imposing octagonal structure contains three halls, the largest of which holds 14,000 people. Besides the large-scale rock concerts, the national championships of the different branches of the martial arts are also held here every year. The Nippon Budokan was originally built for the judo competition in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics - hence the name, meaning "martial arts hall"."

Hi, Ive been training at shinkyokushin karate dojo located close to horinouchi station for about 6 months, pretty intense training, not too much of kata bull****, friendly people. Recently started training at daido juku dojo located at Daeio mall right outside the base, good stuff, but way too expensive, only once a week. Would definately recommend checking out the stuff on base, Judo - $30/mnth, wrestling - free, all the other stuff they offer does not look too good, unless you want it for your kids, you know, learn pretty kata moves and such.. Probably gonna go to check out the Rodeo gym soon..

KUDO(basically it's competition based on daido juku ruleset)championship 2009 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oj5qZshKsnY Generally daido juku is almost like mma with gi(karate uniform), its more oriented towards standup, u have set time limit for grappling. The helmets are there to protect your face from injuries(wearing one doesnt mean u cant get knocked out, or knock someone out.The bad thing about my current training is that my dojo is gonna be closing right after new year,so... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIdRZu_lmy8 Shinkyokushin(there's different names for different organizations, but they all pretty much come from kyokushin) - knockdown karate style, full contact, very tough conditioning, bareknuckle fighting.Cons - no face punches in competition, even so its the toughest style of karate, quite well respected even in mma circles Horinoushi station is only two stations away from yokosuka chuo station. There's also one kyokushin dojo right on the blue street, its on the second floor with the big kanji letters on the windows, past the second sidestreet from the start of the blue street.

BTW participated in a class at rodeo style gym yesterday, left with pretty bad impression, i guess its because I had an expectation that they have real instructors, but looks like its more like fighters get together and fight I took a "beginners jujitsu" and "boxing". Notice parenthesis In beginners jujitsu I was the only beginner, which would be just fine, but one of the guys I sparred with almost 'dislocated' my neck, with someone who had 4 years training there I would expect to have more control and safety over a total beginner.. Now.. the boxing class... there was none! couple people just paired up and were doing a little padwork, no instruction or guidance whatsoever
So thats that for Rodeo style gym, not going back there anymore, despite the convenient location and very good price..

For FightClub - I was searching and almost going to post a question regarding this as I'm interested in taking martial arts classes with my husband.

    Questions:

    1) Do you have a website?
    2) Do you provide belts and equipment (garment, clothing, etc) or is that a separate fee?
    3) Are all your adult classes on the weekends or are they during the week too?

Very interested when we relocate to Japan this Fall. Please provide any more info if possible!

    THank you!

The train ride costs about 235 yen, there's also a kyokushin dojo on the blue street right above  the ringo hut noodle shop.
Also to Ichiban martial arts -  you state that you teach kyokushin, do you mind telling me what rank do you have in kyokushin and who awarded it?

    3. Dan from Daigo Oishi, (I train kyokushin for over 25 years)I train under (my master was) My Brother (5Dan) Jon Bluming, mas oyama, Sergey Yakunin and Daigo Oishi. but because the politices and problems after Master Oyama passed away I not do any Dan Test and I now not in a organization. but I train old style kyokushin, the new kyokushin the most organization teach is for me not real the kyokushin from master oyama. when you want train normal kyokushin go to the dojo on the blue street, the master is a nice guy.

sorry I meant, the cost or monthly fees for the dojo. I live close by to horinouchi so the location would be ideal.
