Anyone visiting Japan, will probably hear the term "LOVE MOTEL, or LOVE HOTEL" while they are here.

Here is the definition: A love hotel (ラブホテル, rabu hoteru?) is a type of short-stay hotel found in Japan operated primarily for the purpose of allowing couples privacy to have sexual intercourse.
Love hotels can usually be identified using symbols such as hearts and the offer of a room rate for a "rest" (休憩, kyūkei?) as well as for an overnight stay.

The period of a "rest" varies, typically ranging from one to three hours. Cheaper daytime off-peak rates are common. In general, reservations are not possible, leaving the hotel will forfeit access to the room, and overnight stay rates only become available after 10pm. These hotels may be used for prostitution or by budget-travelers sharing accommodation.

Entrances are discreet and interaction with staff is minimized, with rooms often selected from a panel of buttons and the bill settled by pneumatic tube, automatic cash machines, or a pair of hands behind a pane of frosted glass. Although cheaper hotels are often quite utilitarian, higher-end hotels may feature fanciful rooms decorated with anime characters, equipped with rotating beds, ceiling mirrors, or karaoke machines, strange lighting or styled similarly to dungeons, sometimes including S&M gear.

These hotels are typically either concentrated in city districts close to stations, near highways on the city outskirts, or in industrial districts. Love hotel architecture is sometimes garish, with buildings shaped like castles, boats or UFOs and lit with neon lighting.

However, some more recent love hotels are very ordinary looking buildings, distinguished mainly by having small, covered, or even no windows.

Not being fluent in Japanese, I usually can tell them by the garish pink & purple neon signs out front.  Even in this sleepy little farm town of Iwakuni, there are at least 3 prominent love hotels that I've passed by.  I guess some things are universal in Japan.

Anyone know what the average hourly room rate is at a place like this?

Well in the states you have the motel, Japan has the Love hotel. Japanese people take pride in anything they do when it comes to work, so rest assured they are clean.

Just think about it, when you are in Shibuya and are at the club and you get a little h**** what are you going to do? Should you wait into the morning train or just go to a love hotel down the street.

My love hotel costs me 200,000 yen per month, but it is available 24/7, and the visitors do the laundry, dishes and cleaning.

this reminds me of a funny story... I was checking in to the New Sanno one night with a friend and a guy came in there waving his military ID ranting at the clerk about how they should give him a room because of his rank and that his rank made him "better than anyone else in here" (he was young, probably mid-twenties, so he really wasn't that high-up; I was PRAYING that someone would overhear and put him in his place). He had a girl with him and told the clerk he "just needs the room for a couple hours" and that he KNEW there was a room available for him. That poor girl looked horrified and guess what, even though he was "better than anyone else" (meaning, apparently, my friend and I), we still got the room over him.

Moral of the story, go find a love hotel, the Sanno doesn't rent by the hour (no matter how special you think you are)
