My daughter just turned two and I realized it's been a year since I had her portraits done.

I saw a place in Ayase Town Hills that appeared to be a photo studio catered to children.  They had tiny Kimono and Hello Kitty backdrops Etc.  I'd LOVE to get Autumn's picture taken but I'm not sure how the whole process works.  I had enough trouble trying to order her a birthday cake.  I got it done but it was painful!  We've only been here a month so I'm hoping my communication skills improve .

    Thanks!

There are a few people the do photography in the classifieds section.

    JapanBases.com Classifieds - "Services"

I know its expensive, but you can also go out in down to get photos taken.

From what I understand Krush (user on this site) does portraits out of her home (Has all the equpment/backdrops). I might be mistaken. You could take her to Alice Studio in Daiei or anywhere throughout Japan. Alice is expensive, but they specialize in portraits of little children. Your photos are given to you on a very high quality paper and even laminated to retain their beauty throughout the years. And let me say (again) THEY ARE EXPENSIVE...

How expensive is expensive? I think it would be a fun day for her and I to play dressup... she LOVES to play dress up.

Wow!! Maybe not then... is there anywhere I can get portraits done in Kimono (just for her) that won't cost me my grocery budget times two? Also, is it somehow Taboo for foreigners to wear them? I don't want to step on toes.

I recommend Joyjill photography http://www.joyjill.com/ she is a professional photographer and a fellow spouse on the USS LASSEN. You can borrow kimono from a Japanese friend or pick one up used from HardOff on 16. Also, each year the YIA does a dress up event where they let Americans of all ages try on Kimonos and take pictures. http://www.navy.mil/search/display....y_id=41170

Yes Try Joy Jill, I went to her and she did a FABULOUS job with my 8month old and family portrait, she charges 93 bucks an hour but she is WELL worth it, she captures the moments and does not tell you to pose or anything, which I LOVE, she just goes with the flow, 1 hour is pretty much all you need, she has a awesome personality. After searching online Joy Jill was perfect

Many, many of my friend's have had their pictures taken by Krush Photography. I have not heard one complaint, and all the pictures I have seen turned out wonderful. I hope to book a sitting with them at some point.

The community center has the Kimono dressing class where you can learn how to wear one properly and take your own pictures for fun! I also recommend Joy Jill Photography. Hey! Maybe she can go to the Kimono class with you and take your pictures there! ;-)

A friend of mine went to Alice and spent well over $1,000.

My wife & I took both of our boys to Alice Studio for the ShichiGoSan photos and we spent around 55,000 yen and I ordered an additional 5x7 for around 10,000 yen. Expensive yes...but keep in mind they provide all the clothing, all the make up, they do the children's hair (and mother's if she is going to be in the photo), they take several photos & you choose which ones you want on a screen. I have not had any better photos taken (even the $1,500 I spent at a private Japanese studio weren't as good).

With that said I also have heard that Krush is awesome, but I have no experience using her (yet)...

Hi! Thanks to all of you who with the kind words who are out here marketing for me! =)

Val, I have a 2 year old as well...I'm not sure what size your daughter is wearing, but I do have a couple of childrens' komonos. The one I have that's close to my daughter's age is still a bit big, but it was given to me by a Japanese friend of mine. The only thing is I don't have shoes at this time. However, I'm fully booked for January and through the middle of February at this time. =( But I do only charge a $20 session fee.

Additionally, both Amanda and Joy are great photographers as well, however, I highly recommend Amanda. Although I'm pretty sure I'm the only one of the 3 that has studio equipment.

None of the 3 of us really do any posing, unless specifically asked to assist. Especially when dealing with children, you get the best shots when they are most comfortable, and I really don't know very many kids that are comfortable when they have to put their hand here, tilt their head over this way....etc, etc. It's no fun. =(

Recently I have been getting more into fashion photography. I've got a little over 10 years experience in front of the camera, and I have been getting more into giving modeling tips and posing in my senior photos along with those that are trying to get their foot into the modeling world. I would still never pose anyone under the age of 5, unless the parent insists on it. And there's a big difference between posing and positioning... =)

One more thing to add, is that I believe once a year there is a photographer that the NEX contracts with who comes in to do the kimono photos, but I believe it's usually in the fall, but I could be mistaken.

    Good luck!

Amanda~ I'm hoping to make the event, if you'd like to meet up and go together!

Thanks Cindy!! Actually I will be getting some studio backgrounds this week, I do have the lighting. So I will probably start doing more of a traveling studio type deal! Once I receive my stuff I will be looking for a couple little models to do some test shoots!!

That's great news!! I would suggest if you want to do studio for adults and full body poses, to see if they can book one of the party rooms. There's much more room to work with!
I don't actually do mine in my house (townhouses are too small for the most part), but I will mostly do them in a tower near me since I get requests for my white vinyl which isn't very transportable. But for any other type of my backdrops, it's very easy to pack up and take anywhere. =)
