I know some of you have had problems with Americable, so I am posting this speed test, and would like everyone to provide their results.

Go to this website:  SPEAK EASY

    Speakeasy Test

So everyone has the same results please copy and paste this into your post when you provide the results:

    Provider:           /       Cost:
    -----------------------------------------
    SAN FRANCISCO, CA:

    Download Speed:      kbps
    Upload Speed:      kbps
    -----------------------------------------
    WASHINGTON, DC:

    Download Speed:      kbps
    Upload Speed:      kbps
    -----------------------------------------

Just perform the 2 tests.  They will provide different results.  Put down who your provider is in Japan.

AFTER THE RESULTS ARE DISPLAYED LOOK ON THE BELOW ON SPEAKEASY, YOU CAN COPY AND PASTE THE RESULTS ON TO THIS THREAD..

    Thanks guys.

Lets see what type of results are given, and then see the comparison for those people paying $100 a month and those paying $250 a month.

I am also paying for 15mbps. One time in 6 months I have gotten more than 3. I can't even get any decent speed right now at past midnight the day before a workday. So their excuse of blaming it on "peak periods" is bogus.

I was thinking about this test last night and I would like to add..... If you are using a router (belkin, linksys, d-link, etc...) you need to take into account the WAN to LAN & WAN to LAN speed of your router. You may be paying for 100Mb, but if your router only has a 20Mb pass through, you only get 20Mb!!!

go here, find your router to see what your throughput is:

So the internet had been pretty "good" this past week but then the weekend hit and it went down the toilet. I turned off the wifi and everything before I did this test:

Download Speed: 594 kbps (74.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 797 kbps (99.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
    -----------------------------------------

    WTF!?

We're so documenting everything now and we'll report later. This is what we get for increased rates?

Wow.....that sux Elizabeth. My internet is 5000Y / month. Plus, I don't pay for cable because I have a Slingbox set up in my home. I would NEVER live on base simply for the fact that I would have to get Americable and that would mean bye bye Slingbox and super slow internet.

It's too bad that you guys on base can't get your Internet from s/one else.

Oh, and I forgot to mention.....the 5000Y was the most expensive plan. I could have gotten something much cheaper, but I chose the plan with the highest connection speed because I have the Slingbox. I think the cheapest plan is still far superior to Americable's connection speed. And, the el' cheapo plan was something like 3000Y.

Yep, we are on the "Slingbox" cable TV plan too, and man is it a lifesaver. It took us almost 6 months to get it to work without freezing up every 15 mins or so, and it turned out to be 1 setting that my sister-in-law back in the states had left unchecked in her settings. Ever since then, Slingbox has been awesome... Just for an update...

Hoff....ya, getting your "settings" right is key with the Slingbox. Every now and then, my connection speed drops and the good ol' Sling doesn't come in right. But, that only happens once in a blue moon. The picture from the Slingbox looks just as good as any other basic Japanese channel I get on TV. I had no idea it would come in that great when I bought! I guess it's a good thing that I didn't get base housing because from the sounds of it, I would have been really disappointed with Americable.

Yea, I was getting so frustrated with it when it wasnt working. My wife was getting pissed at me because I had convinced her to not get JCOM cable when we got the internet because of Slingbox, and then it didnt work. My wife finally got the stateside settings correct when she had to fly home for a family emergency. One damn click, and all of a sudden, it would play forever with no freezes.

And, yes, the speeds the poor onbase folks are posting in this thread definitely would not support Slingbox, thats for sure. Hopefully, the onbase types can take this information and get either a solution to the problem from Americable, or get the base to reconsider allowing Americable to be the only choice for internet...

I have always used speedtest.net and it shows the ISP as NTT Communications and the server is in London.  I am not using a proxy so what in the world is Americable doing?  Not worried about the speed atm as I am on my laptop and wireless.

Your post made me laugh!     I know you're going to make a lot of people on base jealous with your network speed.....you may even make them cry!

You may not be using a proxy but Americable is. They do this to allow you access to Hulu.com (and maybe other reason) that does not allow those with a Japan IP to view the shows on their site.

Yeah it is! I am giving them until the end of this month because that is when they said the "upgrade" will be done. Then I am documenting my speed everyday for 2 weeks, then I am reporting them if there is no change.

Not quite the 1000mbps advertised, but I think it'll get the job done.

I been work in the IT/networking field for over 25 years and I wonder all the time when I see these things if people realise this isn't a true measure of speed because their are so many factors involved that will give you different readings all the time. These test are only good if you have a dedicated circuit and only you have network traffic going over the line. These test just shows you what speed you are getting at that moment in time. my test results are a bit low because I'm also download 10 different big files from locations all over the world at the same time.
But I do like telling people I have the KDDI 1GB fiber line to the house and a 1GB router that connect to my workstations at 1GB that are the NICs.
The whole Yokosuka base has only a single 70MB fiber line for all the commands/user on the base at work..

    Speedtest.net Test as of 26JUL2010

    Download Speed: 15.42Mbps (157.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
    Upload Speed: .98Mbps (100.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

I think the connection is solid enough within the Japan region. It is when we connect to servers based out of USA when the speed drops dramatically. I've had the same problems when connecting to other servers from US to abroad...

In defense to Americable, the bandwidth is true... but they still need to upgrade their infrastructure to support better transfer rates when multiple users are connected. Copper cable is close to seeing it EOL... but begging Americable to do something of that sort is more like giving a shot to a child.

As long as demand calls for it on base, there may not be much we can do... Good luck anyways!

For those of you  on Americable, it looks like we here in Guam kind of have the same problem, they have what they claim to be an 18meg connections, HOWEVER, just like Americable, it is what it is rated ... as long as you only connect to a site on Guam, off island speeds are capped at 3meg, it really sucks especialy when you don't understand that and pay for an 18 meg connection ... what a waste of money.

The point is, you are getting exactly what they advertise, they didn't say you would get 15meg to the states, they just said you would get 15 meg and you are ... to Tokyo.

    Sorry

I guess based on this data, I can conclude that Jcom offers the best speed for internet. If someone could help me find a fast mobile internet device in Yokosuka, I would appreciate for the help. I know of a company called UQ but I can't find it anywhere in Yokosuka base.

Special note about this before I start:  I signed up in the beginning of the year, when they had a special promotion, so I'm getting all of this for free (minus a $30 installation fee) until May.  Then, the usual monthly fee will kick in.  Without further ado:
