    The two brothers
    Jan. 15, 2010
    By Chaplain Donald Moss

There were two brothers who lived in a small village in Poland. The two brothers had inherited the family farm. One brother was married and had many children. The other brother was single and liked to live alone. The two brothers loved each other, so they decided to divide the family farm into two equal parts. Each brother had exactly one half of the family farm.

One night the married brother pondered, in bed, the fate of his unmarried brother. He considered that this single man had no wife or children. He worried that he would not have anyone to look after him in his old age. He worried that he would be lonely.

So, the married brother got out of bed and went to his grain bin to fill a large sack full of wheat. Then, he carried the sack of grain to his brother’s grain bin and dumped the wheat in.

Meanwhile, the unmarried brother pondered the fate of his married brother. He considered that he had many children and a wife to support. He considered that he would need a great deal more to feed so many people.

So, the unmarried brother got up in the middle of the night and went to his grain bin. He filled a very large sack full of wheat. Then, he carried the sack to this brother’s grain bin and dumped the wheat in.

The two brothers continued this practice for many years. Each night each brother got up in the middle of the night to make sure his brother got some extra help.

Then, one evening, both brothers met on the path, each carrying a large sack of wheat. It was at that time that they knew they had been helping each other for many years.

Both brothers died and went to heaven. Years later, the people of the village decided to build a new church. They decided to build it at the place where the two brothers met carrying their sacks of wheat. They thought that would be a good place for a church because that would be the holiest place in the village.

It is so true that, if we want to find holiness, all we need to do is look for the place where there is a lot of love.
