I have been in the commissary on three different occasions now and I've heard inappropriate music in the background. Tonight, they were playing a song talking about being stoned and saying, "Everybody lets just get stoned." This is unacceptable!!! One time there was a public service announcement talking about sex. And on the third occasion there was a song with cuss word in it. My 3 year old pointed that one out. I've complained on ICE three times, but tonight, the manager's office was dark, so I didn't want to track him or her down to complain in person. Believe me, if I didn't have two cranky kids with me, I would have!!! Thanks for letting me rant.

I think this same question has been brought up several times in the past.
I just did a quick search and found a few others about explicit music onbase.

Music with explicit lyrics was being played over the gym’s sound system
    http://yokosukabase.com/forums/aff/...topic.aspx

Music being played was extremely vulgar and adult themed at the Yokosuka Bowling Center
    http://yokosukabase.com/forums/aff/...topic.aspx

These Q/A's are official answers from the base about the topics..

I could of swore I posted a while ago about the commissary complaints. I remember the answer was something like: "Its the responsibility of the person that does the ID checker at the front to control the music that is played." Sometimes if the person is into Classical, thats played, and if another person is into Country, Country is played.

    My advice:
The base commissary needs to upgrade their system, get a CPU connected to the internet, and stream music from a respectable station, which almost all major companies in the states do. They dont leave it up for manual methods, or allowing people to put their own CD's into the system. These respectable radio stations know very well, and put on their channels that "No adult content will be streamed." It usually does a pretty good mix, and will solve their problems. They just need some techie geeks to get in there, and set everything up.. good luck!

I believe the Commissary is piping in music from one of the AFN Radio Satellite stations, not sure which one. Even the stuff from "Eagle 810" is pretty vulgar, but those Military AFN DJ's have little content control over what they air as I understand. They go with "contemporary trends."

    That is a shame!
    ------------------------------------------------------
if you go to a coffee shop or any kind of store out in town you will hear much worse.
    ------------------------------------------------------
This is true. The stores in town are oblivious to English foul language. I've heard some real gems shopping at Claires Boutique with my children at Moore's City.
    ------------------------------------------------------
I think a base establishment should try to do better.
    ------------------------------------------------------
Some of the places have satellite radio and it's very vague as to what kind of music it is. It'll be fine one minute, but then they sneak in a song or two that's not kid friendly. Maybe that's what's going on? I was JUST thinking about Claire's! LOL!
    ------------------------------------------------------
You should bring back Jazz Night...
    ------------------------------------------------------
This is what is wrong with America, why should we censor everything? So what! It wasn't the perfect goody two shoes song. Get over it. Your kids have heard/will hear much worse. Next thing you know we are going to hear of a lawsuit against the Commissary and prices will go through the roof. Thank you America. This is what I fight to protect! BTW I have two little ones 5 & 3 and I love rap/hip hop/gangster music what ever you want to call it. I don't play it around them, but if they hear it it isn't going to ruin them. I have not heard them say a single curse word.
    ------------------------------------------------------
I think children should be protected at all costs. :)
    ------------------------------------------------------
Before this becomes an issue of free speech and all, please recognize that there must be a line drawn that respects the cultures of the country being represent as well as the culture of the country we are currently in. Having said that, inappropriate may not so much be about language but about content. A simple answer, probably not liked by anyone, would be simply to play instrumental music which can still convey music styles without being disrespectful to either nation. But that's just one American's 2 cents...

so let me get this straight.... you people get offended when people play music with offensive language in front of your children, but then you stick them in front of a tv, AND video games that are no better? hmmm.... let me think about this for a second.

My argument was that we were not in a video arcade or a teen club. We were at the only place on base to buy groceries. I can see your point if I were inside Club A complaining that they were playing too much Rap and not enough Country. But, this is the commissary!
PS. My kids don't own video games, other than a V-smile and I'm happy with what they learn from that. Also, we don't allow them to watch TV unsupervised, so I know they aren't hearing things there. I can't protect them from every bad word or every suggestive commercial, but I do have the right to shop in a grocery store on a military base and not be bombarded by vulgar music. So, thank you for your opinion, it's your right to disagree.

haha well at least they can learn what this stuff means from you and not on the street or at school. I like the music these days it doesnt make me want to go on a murderous rampage they could be playing some corny ass oldies. If you teach your kids that these words are not appropriate you'll have nothing to worry about. Mine knows what they are and she knows she'll have hell to pay if she uses them.

...I've never even noticed the music in the store! It's either because I'm focused on not forgetting anything, or there's enough kids yelling and crying to drown out the bad music.

Who gives a rat's behind about the music. It's all crap nowadays anyway, no matter where you turn. Ever listen to those lame DJ's on Eagle 810 Radio? This one guy must say, "uh," a couple of hundred times during his program and sounds like a real wuss.

Yeah, and how 'bout those oversized carriages with the kiddie cars that take up half the friggin' aisles!

And how 'bout the fact that the Commissary had to create a unmanned mini-Day Care Center WITH YOUR TAX DOLLARS smack in the middle of the place so the rug-rats can watch movies and get all hyper while their parents go shopping while their kids are unsupervised. Doesn't that prove the case that parents don't have to supervise their kids any more?

Yeah, you gotta' love the 21st Century. We're getting dumber and dumber as the Welfare State takes over. Glenn Beck is right.

    RR,
I agree completely. There has always been stupid people but the difference now is that many people work hard at being stupid.
It's not the idiot who is the problem, it's the motivated idiot.

Slick - Yes, indeed, we are crankin' out some real low-balling idiots nowadays. Who ever dreamed up the idea of having Navy guys carry umbrellas, BTW? What's up with that dude?

hahaha The motivated idiot...how most of my ship works!! I didn't understand what they were talking about when I was told, "If you were smart, you'd pretend to know nothing." ....huh?

I'd also like to know why we're not allowed to utilize our pockets. If someone takes me for a shitbag E-5 because I "look" dumb with my hands in my pockets, screw them, my hands are cold. They sing much differently when they need me to fix the network.

Once again...I'll just say the only thing making any word foul is your opinion of that word. They are just letters formed together for meaning...if a word can harm you I would hate to know what will cause you to break down. The Japanese are well informed of our so called foul language and they treat it appropriately...as just words which are not harmful in any way. There is way too much in this world to worry about...

Primemas is right.( ohhh how it hurts to say that ) Teach them the difference between right and wrong. You can't shelter them forever. How will they develop decision making skills if they are never exposed to anything they shouldn't do/hear/eat/drink or smoke..?

All complaints of music need to be directed to AFN, that is usually what plays. Sad but true......
I'd love to be able to pop in my own CD's, James Taylor, America, Chicago, etc.. then some wisenheimer kid younger than my kids would be running his soup cooler about the "Old Farts" music. :-(

Oh believe me, someone can find something....

    -------
    " I'm a joker. I'm a smoker. I'm a midnight toker."
    --------
"Imagine there's no Heaven It's easy if you try"
    -------
"And she held it in her hand And this is what she had to say:
A pearl necklace.  She wanna pearl necklace"
    -------
    Andddd... anything by Prince....
    ------

I don't pretend to 'get-it' but at least I'm not as bad as the people kvetching over the drug references in Afroman's 'Because I Got High'

The way I think of it is that we did it to our parents and the kids are doing it right back to us.
