So it seems as if everytime I walk into the beauty salon at the NEX, I feel as if I'm inconveniencing the people who are supposed to be a convenience to me.

Has anyone tried out the salons outside of base? A co-worker has recommended HairMakeReally, and says she's gone about six times so far with no negative comments to date.

I've gone to Kenji and CLAPS and they are both great!(both on Blue Street) They both have people there who speak english (most of the time) and if no one is there at the time, they will ask you to schedule an appointment. Or have a picture of exactly what you want, that always makes it easy. There is also a place out in Yokohama, and she advertises in the Seahawk Classifieds. A friend of mine went out there and she loved the outcome.

I would really love the number for TOPS, please. I took my girls to Pookies, it's a little farther away from the base, it's down 27 a bit, but they did a great job and had someone who speaks English. We tried to get them back in, but every time we call now, there's no one who speaks English. I don't know if we're just not catching them, or if they don't work there anymore.

I would like to add that most Salons don't need to speak English... They all understand short, long, colour, just a little...the basics. What do you need to say...you really can just motion with your hand and say "short" or "just a little" and I guarantee you that the stylist will understand that...

I have used the same guy for over 12 years and now I just sit down and let the master work. He colours my hair when he wants and changes the style when he wants. That kind of trust is obviously gained after years, but the point is...there is a ton of talent outside that gate!

You could try Sakura right outside of base. It's a really good salon and the guy that owns it is American. He owned the salon in the Nex not too long ago. They have good prices and they also serve you drinks (alcoholic and non alcoholic) as you are getting pampered.

I go to Glam: United Works in Minato Mirai near landmark Tower. The guys name is Kenji, he does a great job. He has worked in Europe and New York. He speaks fairly good English, more then enough to know what you want. I get blond highlights and haircuts! The number to the salon is 045-227-2400- when they answer you can either ask for Kenji or as for English. The reception desk is starting to learn more English! Also I should say it takes a tad longer then salons in the states but they treat you very well. And you get a shoulder message as part of your experience )

I agree with Military Wife.... I have been to Sakura and the people are very nice... If you walk out the front gate and cross the road then take a right... It is down on the left. They all speak really good english... It was a enjoyable experience !!!!

I absolutely LOVE Kenji salon on Blue Street. Great Service, amazing shampoos (basically a 20 minute massage). A lot of the people I have referred there get 50% off everything their first visit (I did as well). They continue to give me discounts when my friends come in and give them my name. I love the way they pamper you in the Japanese salons.....it's definitely something I'll miss when I move back home.

Hi! I was just reading your post and saw how much you enjoyed your experience there. I am from Louisiana and I have been going to the same hair stylist for 5 years now and now that I am here, I'm lost. I don't trust people easily with my hair. My hair is dyed darkkkk brown and I am trying to get back to my natural color. Do you think that they could do that for me? I was wondering about their prices too. I'm going to get out this weekend and try to get something. If you could, message me back! THANKS!

I actually had my hair done at Kenji and Im sorry but it was HORRIBLE, I myself am a Hairdresser and heard so many great things about this place, she OVER layerd my hair Japanese style, all choppy and thined it out so now it looks sgraggly, she did NOT know how to work with my hair ( i have that course mexican hair) and just put globs of aveda straightning product on my hair DRY!!! (Apply before blow dry) Augh I looked worse coming out then I did walking in. Not worth $70.00.

My friend also got paid $300.00 for a digital perm that did not even last a week.

I am in the works about getting hair color here to Japan and all my supplies, I graduated at Paul Mitchell the School and specialize in Up dos. And can do anything else, as soon as I get everything situated I will post my services on this site.

Which Kenji did you go to? Also what was the stylist's name. I'd like to avoid her.

I went to the NEX and had Kumi. It was absolutely terrible. She cut my very long hair dry with just a spray bottle. I was ready for a major change and showed her pictures and she basically told me that she didn't think it would look good and she would just trim me. What an absolute waste of a babysitter and twenty bucks. I wish I would have booked somewhere out in town. The price doesn't really matter but I want a good salon experience and someone who isn't afraid to cut my hair! It's just regular old fine white girl hair. LOL

Not sure how many of you ladies have found it already (I don't walk around Blue St. much, lol), but N's Nail is right down that little street behind Ringer Hut, before you hit Mikasa. Two wonderful ladies who do a full set for 6000 Yen! It's the best service I've had since I've been here, exactly what I wanted for CHEAPER than what I was used to paying back home (normally $80). Both of them also have very pretty and impressive nail art designs, for those of you who can wear those. I have their card in my purse and I'll post the # if any of you are interested. They were so sweet and deserve a growing customer base.

Blonde Haighlights anyone? Been reading this thread and trying to look around. Super picky, need a perfectionist stylist. Second tour in Japan and last time I went to Tokyo, Sin Den, it was good but quite a lot of travel. Wondering if anyone can recommend someone closer to Yokosuka who is trained in Western hair, and good at doing two color weaves on blonde hair. I even have two formulas that I like to alternate to create a very natural look. Have I been specific enough? Thanks!

This is an awesome thread, as I arrived in Japan about a month ago and am in need of a hair stylist. I am also very picky, as I have wavy, course hair that will "poof out" a mile if not cut correctly!

Two more items of interest are trying to find a salon that will highlight my hair with color product that I bring with me (I like a low chemical product called NaturTint), and if anyone has found a salon that does threading versus waxing.

Alejandra - are you set up yet to provide a basic hair cut, by any chance? Otherwise, I think I'll give either TOPS or Sakura a try since I haven't seen any negative posts.

I recently went to Sakura and was not impressed with my cut. There is only one stylist and he wore sunglasses the whole time. My hair is fairly short, super thick and wavy. It was uneven and had very blunt layers. He didn't thin it out or break up the ends at all. Thankfully I went to the states the next week and had my regular stylist fix it but had to go even shorter to make it somewhat even. I'd read good reviews on here about them so I'm not sure what happened with my cut.
A friend went to Rikki love and body (I think that is what it's called) and got a great cut. The search continues!

Has anyone ever been to or heard anything about Pookies? (across from Seika Kindergarten).

I drive by it every day and it always seems to have at least 3-4 ladies having their hair done- it's NEVER empty. Prices on their menu look very reasonable too. I've been wanting to stop in for 2 years now but I'm scared I won't be able to tell them I just want a hair cut! My Japanese is so limited.

Hey all,  I'm loving all the info on local salons.  I'm wondering if anyone knows of someone who is good at cutting curly hair.  I'm worried that Japanese stylists will not know how to do it properly since they mostly deal with naturally straight hair.  I think a lot of stylists even in the states cut curly hair just like they would straight hair.  I'm wondering if that is the difference in negative/positive reviews of the stylists here.  Anyway, if there are any curly-tops out there who have had a good experience here in Yokosuka, please let me know!

I am in dire need of getting my hair highlighted and am seriously daunted going into the Japanese salons(I didn't enjoy my experience at the Nex). I have read several posts regarding Kenje salon on blue street. Was it difficult speaking trying to make a hair appointment when you understand limited Japanese? Does anyone have any tips when I go into the salon to make an appointment?

I can't speak for Kenje salon but the salon I used to go to has 1 stylist that speaks moderate english (salon conversation yes, weather and holidays not so much). then the new one I went to, they have more than 1 stylist that speaks moderate english.

Getting appointments was kinda straight to the point on both of the hair salons, they asked for my name, preferred stylist and when.

Try not to book your appointments on the weekends if you can do it on weekdays, when there is no wait list, they usually give me a long head, neck and shoulder massage.

Advice about Japanese salons if you are a natural blonde like myself...don't let them high light your hair...I came out with strawberry shortcake pink...no lie...because of the dark color of the japanese hair, they will bleach it almost white then put color on it..that doesn't work if you are blonde as blondes can take color very well. This was in Sasebo so maybe this area is different. I usually color my own now b/c of that one experience. If you do find a good salon off base, it is heaven for the extra care you get. Top notch

    bringing this thread back.

Jessica left the NEX and i SOOOOO need to find someone who can cut AND color ( blonde highlights- normally just bleach bc my hair is naturally blonde)

i went to the NEX to make an appointment today with jessica and they told me she was gone. Even the receptionist didnt seem very confident in any of the people to do my hair and i was like.. k forget it.

I've never in 10 years have someone to be able to do my hair right besides jessica (very disappointing) my hair has been black, purple orange pink... you name it. If any one cuts hair that lives on base that has VERY good experience i will like to try...

all this happens at the time i want a "drastic" hair change lol

im extremely picky and VERY nervous to go off base. my hair is very thick, naturally blonde, and doesnt re act to color very well besides bleach lol i know theres about a 75% chance of the color screwing up and im scared to death of getting it cut wrong!

I love Riki Love and Body - Go out Womble gate and walk to your left. It is in the first block on the left. Great service, great color and cuts there. Sanea is usually there and she speaks wonderful English.

My wife did not like the way the staff at the NEX salon talked to her on the phone while trying to schedule an appointment. She decided to try Kenji on Blue Street and loved it. From the minute she entered the door she felt pampered. She said she will only get her hair cut at Kenji while we are here in Japan.

The Japanese salons are the best. They will make you feel so special. You will be blown away by the service. We moved and I miss them so much. Bring a picture if you can. If you are getting color it does take a little longer than American salons.

Riki's Love & Body (right outside of Womble Gate) is fantastic. There is one English speaker there.
Kenji - has an English speaker. Be careful with the add ons - they really add up.
CLAPS - no English speaker when I went, but still got great color and a good cut. They have a frequent user card.

I also had a less than great experience at the NEX though I was getting my nails done (just a fill) and my nails turned out fine but it took almost two hours. While I was in there I also noticed that their pedicure station was kind of run down and didn't look very clean.

Any how a friend and I are looking to get pedicures together and I have heard that most places can only handle one pedicure at a time, does anyone know of place that can do multiple pedicures at once?
