Has anyone had a good or bad experience with getting blonde highlights at the hair salon on base? Any recommendations for somewhere to go?

I have been using the same guy for years for highlights and never had any concerns. He is great, but not cheap. He uses henna hair coloring and I love it. About 20 minutes from base... If you want more info let me know.

I went to the salon on base 2 times and both times they messed my hair up bad. The first time was for a cut and they cut too much off, then I had to fix it so ended up cutting more(somewhere else), and the 2nd time was for simple highlights and they FRIED my hair. I take care of my hair to the nth degree but one visit to them for highlights messed it up so bad it sucked. I go out to CLAPS on Blue street, they normally have someone there who speaks english but if not they try to make you an appointment when someone will be there. I've also heard about a girl in yokohama that used to work stateside (look for her in the seahawk classifieds), a friend of mine went out there and she said she was awesome. Hope this helps.

I've been going to Kenji just off base. It's on Blue Street in the middle of Mikasa Mall. When you go in, ask if they have first time discounts. They should offer you 50% off all services for your first visit. They do an awesome job! There are a few of them that speak fairly decent english as well. Shoot me a message if you want more information!

First off, I second KRUSH, on Kenji salon. They get tons of Navywives, and they have given me the best color, and cuts I've had in my 32 1/2 years of life. It's amazing at how above and beyond they go in Japanese salons. There is a women named Jessica that cuts and dyes out of her tower here in Ikego. Her business I believe is called Color me pink. My friend went to her the other day and was impressed. If you're interested, I can try to get the contact info for you.

If you haven't gone yet, I have a 50% off coupon that's good for all services you get on that day. I had "the works" done and left playing $115, vs $230.00. This included cut, color, highlights, shampoo, oil treamtent, and an AMAZING deep conditioning that involved scalp massage.

If you're interested, let me know, and I'll MPS you the coupon.....I think you may have to use the stylist that gave it to me though. His name is Yamaki, and he is amazing.

Wow, $200 to get your hair done. I'll just go the Commissary, Aisle one, buy the $5 cheap stuff and save lots of money so I can buy more junk at all those bazaars and fill up my house with things I really don't need or can afford. Oh, life in Yokosuka ...

If you are still looking for a place in San Diego, check out Hairspray.   It is around Hillcrest/North Park.  Ask for Rebecca, she is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G

LBWis; I use Avante at the NEX salon. I had a horror experience before her though

I went in to get my brown hair - blond. The girl I used, I wont name names on here, said noo problem and that it would be easy. So she makes up the dye which smelled so strong it made my eyes water. I said something about how strong it was (because I've had my hair bleached before and it never smelled that bad) and she said it was fine and kept going. She finished and put me under the hair dryer and I was suppose to stay under for 45 minutes; I was under for 5 until my whole scalp felt like it was on fire. She ran me to wash it out and when I got to the mirror it was orange a lovely mixture of some parts orange and some parts bleached. EVERYONE in the salon came around me trying to mess with my hair until I started tearing up and excused myself to the bathroom, thats where I tried to run my fingers through my hair and it was so fried I couldn't even begin to run the tips of my fingers through it. She ended up having to cut my hair above my shoulders when it was down to the middle of my back, she couldn't do anything about the color because of the risk of it falling out.

So yeah, I'll message you the name if you're planning on going to the salon. Kelly and Avante are my favorites and I don't let anyone else touch my hair. Its been 5 months and my hair has been cut several times and deep conditioned. Avante cut and colored my hair about a month ago and I'm going in at the end of this month to get highlights.

You just have to know who to go to at the NEX

I am in bad need of a haircut and lowlights. Can any of you tell me if Yamaki is still available at Kenji? I like to do a short funky cut with black accents. If you have any advice it would be much appreciated!!
