Commissary issue

Watch out at the Yokosuka deli!

Today, I went to the deli to purchase some American cheese. It was slow.... so she cut the cheese and typed in the code for the cheese. You know, they type in the code, set the deli item on the scale, and print out the ticket. I'm mindlessly watching and honestly just waiting for her to finish so that I could check out and go home. She hands me the cheese.... and I'm confused. It just doesn't look right. I wasn't sure if she did or didn't weigh it, but it really didn't look like a pound.

When I got to the checkout, I asked the teller to weigh it. She looked at me like I grew another head, but weighed the cheese. Sure enough - it was .55 lb - just over 1/2 a pound - but I was charged for a full pound.

Managers got involved, but no one thought it was a big deal. "She just thinks she knows the weight" or "I'm sorry, I fixed it for you". Seriously? There are scales for a reason....

Make sure you watch the deli person actually weigh your items at the deli!!!

Commissary allowing non ID holders in

Has anyone else noticed this over the weekend? I was at the commissary over the weekend, and seems they are now allowing guests in. Just in the short time i was there, I witnessed a spouse with some friends exchanging money in an isle and purchasing items for them. Is this going to be a permanant thing? I'd hate for it to turn into the Exchange, where this is a daily occurance and nothing is done about it. I emailed the CFAY action line, but havent heard back. Does anyone have any info?

Yamato Shrine Sale

Yamato Shrine Sale is held on the third Saturday of every month. Here are the driving directions from Yokosuka Naval Base to the Yamato Shrine Sale.

Take the Yoko-Yoko to the Shimokawai exit (RT 45)
At the stoplight at the end of the exit turn LEFT.

Proceed straight until you see a blue highway sign overhead that says Yamato to the right. Turn RIGHT here at the stoplight (RT 40)

Follow the road until you see railroad tracks that cross the road
IMMEDIATELY before the railroad tracks turn RIGHT.

Go straight at the stop sign, stoplight, and 2nd stoplight
Just after the 2nd stoplight turn LEFT into pay parking lot. Take a ticket and park. The shrine sale is just outside the parking lot.

The shrine sale runs both right and left of the parking lot.

If you walk to the left of the parking lot you'll come to a train station...the shrine sale continues on the other side of the train station (this is where there is usually a vendor that has "piles" of kimono and haori that can sell for 500-1000 Yen!) If you walk to the right of the parking lot the shrine sale continues on the other side of the street.

Have fun shopping

Military discounts in the States

I got the following from the Personal Finance Management Program here in Iwakuni; tips on restaurants, stores and others who offer military discounts in the States.

It never hurts to ask. I remember once I was shopping at Kragen auto parts, I had a bunch of oil & other supplies. The cashier saw my retired ID card in my wallet and volunteered that they had a 10% military discount. Who knew? I ended up saving about $10.

I almost always ask this at hotels, and often in restaurants; it works more often than you might think. Not every branch of each vendor will offer a discount. Also, as the article says, military discount doesn't always mean the cheapest price (esp airlines). There are times when a special sale price is lower than military discount, or AAA, or other discount.

Check it out...
100Yen store across the street from daie mall is under renovation

Did everyone know that 100Yen store across the street from daie mall is under renovation?
They closed January 14th,2013.

It is under renovation from January 21 to February 1, 2013.
Renewal open date is February 2 , 2013

I walked to the 100yen store and they were closed, so I had to walk all the way to the one near the Yokosuka-Chuo Station. I like that store, too. But it was such a inconvenient especially when I didnt have much time... So I thought it good share with everyone.

BTW, there is a small 100yen store inside Daie mall, too. But they dont have much stuff...
And there is a 300yen store inside the More's. It is small as well but they have cute stuff.
Shopping questions

Hi everyone. We will be arriving in Yokosuka in August. I am kind of new. I spent 4 years and graduated high school in Fukuoka. However, that was 20 year ago and we were not part of the Navy. So, we went to Japan with 3 cats and 2 suitcases each. But this time we get to take a few things with us . But I don't want to take too much. Mostly, I am curious about the shopping on base and what the Costco has to offer. (Last time I lived there I had NO access to anything American - in the way of food or houshold supplies and there wasn't a Costo or Ikea). I have tried to look at Costo online but I cannot see products for Japan. And also, the Nex. I cannot access the NEX website because my husband is no longer in the Navy. Anyway, back to my question. I need to buy bicycles and beds. (Our bicycles were stolen and we have a California king)

I know it seems kind of silly but if it is cheaper to buy them here then well.....you know, frugal and all that.

So I was wondering what is the average price, quality, variety of beds and bicycles at the Nex or costco or even at a Japanese shop (as I said, it was 20 years ago and inflation).

Thanks for any information you can give me.

In Search of Chopstick Holder

For the longest time, my wife and I have been in search of a chopstick holder. We have a few sets of the formal chopsticks, but we also purchased a large pack of the wooden, disposable, one time use chopsticks. The holder we are looking for is something similar to the ones you see at the 100 Yen sushi places, or conveyor sushi places. It's a box with a hinge lid and clear top. We have looked everywhere and cannot find one like it. Even shops that sell nothing but chopsticks do not have this type of holder. I've tried searching online, amazon, you name it! If anyone can help me find one, even if it's ordered online, I would greatly appreciate it. I will try to get a pic next time I go. Hopefully my description is good enough to understand what I'm referring to.

Thanks in advance!
