Michelle, I love you. The other night, I think the entire country saw just how lucky I am. Malia and Sasha, you make me so proud . but don't get any ideas, you're still going to class tomorrow. And Joe Biden, thank you for being the best vice president I could ever hope for.

Madam Chairwoman, delegates, I accept your nomination for president of the United States.

The first time I addressed this convention in 2004, I was a younger man; a senate candidate from Illinois who spoke about hope— not blind optimism or wishful thinking, but hope in the face of difficulty; hope in the face of uncertainty; that dogged faith in the future which has pushed this nation forward, even when the odds are great; even when the road is long.

Eight years later, that hope has been tested— by the cost of war; by one of the worst economic crises in history; and by political gridlock that's left us wondering whether it's still possible to tackle the challenges of our time.

I know that campaigns can seem small, and even silly. Trivial things become big distractions. Serious issues become sound bites. And the truth gets buried under an avalanche of money and advertising. If you're sick of hearing me approve this message, believe me— so am I.

But when all is said and done— when you pick up that ballot to vote— you will face the clearest choice of any time in a generation. Over the next few years, big decisions will be made in Washington, on jobs and the economy; taxes and deficits; energy and education; war and peace— decisions that will have a huge impact on our lives and our children's lives for decades to come.

On every issue, the choice you face won't be just between two candidates or two parties.

It will be a choice between two different paths for America.

A choice between two fundamentally different visions for the future.

Ours is a fight to restore the values that built the largest middle class and the strongest economy the world has ever known; the values my grandfather defended as a soldier in Patton's Army; the values that drove my grandmother to work on a bomber assembly line while he was gone.

They knew they were part of something larger— a nation that triumphed over fascism and depression; a nation where the most innovative businesses turned out the world's best products, and everyone shared in the pride and success— from the corner office to the factory floor. My grandparents were given the chance to go to college, buy their first home, and fulfill the basic bargain at the heart of America's story: the promise that hard work will pay off; that responsibility will be rewarded; that everyone gets a fair shot, and everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same rules— from Main Street to Wall Street to Washington, D.C.

As we were meeting prior to the event at a local coffee shop, the police arrived. The officer told us that the Seattle Consulate of Japan had called them and informed them of our intended protest. He also stated that they provided him with a printout from ourFacebook page

After a giving the officer an overview of on the crisis of international parental child abduction to and within Japan, he wished us well and told us to call him if we had any questions while at the protest.

We have long suspected that the Government of Japan has been monitoring our efforts and activities. Now it has been confirmed, we have their attention. So if they no longer wish to be known as “A Black Hole For Child Abduction”, the solution is simple. Return our abducted children to us.

I will admit a am for Mitt, but I think in the current physical crisis the nation , what is in store for the DOD and better yet the DOD in Japan. I can think of it the 500 billion Obama is looking to cut, and I know Mitt comes from successes in cutting at Bane. I think it would be fun and informative to have discussion on this topic.

The Department of Defense (DoD) maintains a policy that DoD personnel acting in their official capacity may not engage in activities that associate the DoD with any partisan political campaign or election, candidate, cause, or issue.

All military personnel, including National Guard and reserve forces, are prohibited from wearing military uniforms at political campaigns or election events.

Military members may not:

• Fundraise

• Speak

• Canvass or advocate on behalf of a partisan candidate or cause.

• Military members are disallowed from placing partisan political signage in military housing onboard military installations.

Acceptable political activities:

• Members are allowed (in a private capacity) to support their candidate or cause in limited scope, as long as it is never in uniform and is not serving a large role within the cause (i.e., supervisory position).

This is just one of hundreds of cases affecting U.S. citizens which continue to cause anguish and suffering for the fathers of these children. Not only have the father’s rights been violated but also the rights of these children to have contact with their father. The stories are similar, a Japanese spouse and mother of children whose father is an American, abruptly takes the children and flees to Japan where the Japanese Government refuses to intervene. The father is effectively deprived of seeing his children further. In many of these cases, there was a court order prohibiting such action by the mother making her a fugitive from justice also.

Making this situation all the more egregious is the GOJ’s clamoring for international support for the return of Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea. The hypocrisy is monumental. The GOJ needs to ratify the Hague Treaty and the U.S. must apply more pressure for them to do so.

I’m not a historian but I have read a few books and taken a few courses. So I have an appreciation for conditions in Afghanistan. Going back over two thousand years we see that Alexander The Great attempted to conquer and hold this area. He gave up and withdrew. The Greek-Bactrian Kingdom he left didn’t last very long. Subsequent centuries saw various conquerors come and go. Afghanistan continued to remain a primitive country with a population that was illiterate and noted for their fierce intolerance of outsiders. The British tried again in the 19th century with disastrous results. During the 1980′s we saw the dismal failure of the Soviets to control the place. So my question is: What the hell are we doing there now? The Taliban was overthrown ten years ago. Osama Bin Laden is dead. Do we honestly think that we can take this nation of illiterate hostile peasants and turn it into some kind democracy? Ridiculous. We should withdraw all U.S. troops as soon as possible.

With homosexuals now able to serve openly in the military, the gay rights movement’s next battleground is to persuade the Obama administration to end the armed forces’ ban on “transgenders,” a group that includes transsexuals and cross-dressers.

“Our position is that the military should re-examine the policy, the medical regulations, so as to allow open service for transgender people,” said Vincent Paolo Villano, spokesman for the 6,000-member Center for Transgender Equality.

The Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN), which pushed to end the military’s gay ban, is urging President Obama to sign an executive order prohibiting discrimination based on “gender identity.”

It had wanted the order to happen on Sept. 20, the official date “don’t ask, don’t tell,” as the gay ban was called, ended via repeal legislation signed by Mr. Obama.

SLDN’s goal is contained on a Web page with the headline, “Working toward transgender military service.” The page states that a decision to remove the ban must be made at the Pentagon. “Relationships between transgender organizations, medical associations, and military allies will be crucial for advancing this issue,” it says.

How to decrease military spending Part One

There is much talk of decreasing military spending. This usually revolves around eliminating large numbers of military personnel. Yet there is another area where significant reductions in expenditure of funds could be achieved without lessening troop strength or reducing numbers of ships, aircraft or other hardware. We have for years maintained large military overseas bases for good reason. As part of this structure, we have made it possible for military personnel to be accompanied on tours of duty by their families. In order to do so, large amounts of infrastructure such as dependent housing, schools, medical and myriad other support services are required. Additionally, large numbers of personnel are needed to operate their services. Medical, teachers, facilities maintenance personnel, logistical are but a few. Add to this the cost of operating theses services, the possibility of major savings can be readily concluded. If this practice were discontinued, significant savings could be achieved. In order to decrease the hardship imposed by unaccompanied tours, tour length could be shortened. Other accommodations like a mid tour R&R might be implemented. Personnel gains and losses would have to be managed closely. Phased transfers of set numbers would be essential to maintain an adequate number of qualified personnel onboard. Existing housing and school facilities could utilized for military housing and office facilities. Remote housing i.e. Ikego and Negishi (Japan) would become unnecessary and be returned to the Host Country, Japan. This approach would be preferable to further weakening of force structure.

15%?! This just seems crazy to me. Drastic measures like this one are what lead to the Lost Decade in the 1990's. With a nation of savers, I can see how something like this will only lead to another lost decade here in Japan. People will start stashing their money away rather than spending it out in the economy, which will only lead to yet another recession......while economic expansion will cease to exist.

We're already well on our way to following Japan in their footsteps. Big government always had a way of making a mess out of things.

Here we are, they have already built new barracks, new post office, new runway & related facilities, and the money dries up??

Clearly, Marines should have followed the Air Force business model: Build the clubs & golf course first, then go back for the rest of the money later. Now we're stuck with old dated clubs & shiny new airport facilities. Darn that Congress!!
